Questo splendido puledro si gode il suo quarto giorno di vita, dopo aver affrontato una comune problematica dei neonati, la ritenzione di meconio. Durante le prime ore di vita è importante monitorare il puledro per essere sicuri che riesca ad eliminare il contenuto intestinale prodotto già nella vita fetale, il meconio. La sua mancata espulsione de­termina una patologia che, se non pre­cocemente trattata, può portare alla morte del puledro.

L'importanza di questa prima analisi,

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored. Many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic — and promptly seeking qualified veterinary help — can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic; although not every case is avoidable, management plays a key role in prevention and the guidelines listed in the graphic can help maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

What do we check for in a late term foaling mare on ultrasound?

This is an ultrasound image of the placenta.
Structures visible include the amnion (filled with amnionic fluid), chorioallantoic membrane (‘outer placental membrane; filled with allantoic fluid), uterus, and urinary bladder. The combined thickness of the uterus and placenta (CTUP) is indicted by the two cursors. One cursor is placed at the inner aspect of the chorioallantoic membrane and the second cursor is placed at the outer aspect of the uterus as defined by the outline of the Uterine branch of the Vaginal Artery. The CTUP measurement in this mare was 10.2 mm, which is in the normal range for a mare approaching her due date. An increase in the CTUP suggests an increase in the thickness of the chorioallantoic membrane, which could be due to ascending placentitis. We also make sure we feel fetal movement.

"Red bag o prematuro distacco della placenta"
Se la placenta non si rompe al momento del parto, essa apparirà a livello della v***a come un "palloncino rosso". Questa situazione viene definita "red bag" ed indica che il normale sito di rottura della placenta è troppo spesso e la placenta si sta staccando dall'utero. In questa situazione viene interrotto il normale apporto di ossigeno al puledro, motivo per cui bisogna intervenire immediatamente.

It's foaling season and if you have foals coming you need to know what this is and how serious this is.

This is called a red bag. A person we know sent us this after her foal was born severely brain damaged from lack of oxygen and she lost him. She didn't know she had fescue in her hay.

Pregnant mares should not be eating fescue in the last several months of their pregnancy. It is a contributing factor for a red bag situation.

A red bag is the placenta being delivered first. Once this starts the foal is getting no oxygen. Should you Ever see any little bit of red coming get someone to call your vet immediately and send someone to get a really sharp knife, well cleaned knife.

You are probably going to get told to cut through it as quick as you can. It has 7 layers and this is very difficult to do.

If you are going to have foals please do not assume all will go well. It often doesn't. Read, Read, Read everything about foaling.

Espophageal obstruction, or “choke,” is a common equine emergency but can look alarming, especially if you've never seen it before. Unlike in human medicine, where choking refers to a tracheal (or windpipe) obstruction, choke in horses refers to an obstruction of the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

Most commonly, choking occur when horses eat concentrated feed too quickly without chewing it appropriately, which results in a firm bolus lodged in the animal's esophagus. However, esophageal obstruction can also occur with hay or straw, hard treats, carrots, or nonfood objects. Poor dentition, which leads to inadequate chewing, is also a frequent cause of choke.

While common, chokes can have serious consequences so be sure to call your veterinarian as soon as you notice signs of choke. A bad choke is fairly obvious to both veterinarians and horse owners, but a mild choke could be confused with an upper respiratory tract infection or colic.

Horses are obligate nasal breathers, which means a horse’s breathing during exercise only occurs through his nose. During exercise, it becomes twice as difficult for horses to move air into the lungs, with 50% of the total resistance in the upper airway originating in the nasal passages.

One Breath = One Stride. Horses’ breathing and stride are linked at a canter and gallop - horses take one breath with each stride. This is called respiratory-locomotor coupling. Because of this link, anything that affects the horse’s breathing also impacts his stride.

The amount of air moved in and out of the lungs increases in direct proportion to how fast the horse is running. If a horse runs twice as fast, it must move twice as much air in and out.

When horses inhale during exercise, about 90% of the resistance to air movement is in the upper airways: Nostrils, nasal passages, larynx and trachea. The nose is a major contributor to the resistance.

Tightening a horse’s girth too much will affect his performance, not because of constricting the chest and preventing the lungs from expanding, but because it decreases the effectiveness of the muscles around the front of the chest and shoulder that move the forelegs. More strides result in more breaths.

During canter and gallop, horses do not breathe by expanding and contracting their chest. They expand and contract the chest when breathing at rest, when walking and trotting, and when blowing hard after exercise. During a fast canter and gallop, all air movement comes from movement of the legs and diaphragm. The air moves in and out along the lines of a syringe; with the stiff wall of the syringe representing the chest and the plunger the diaphragm.

Horses hold their breath over jumps and do not breathe again until they land; then, they begin by exhaling or breathing out.

You cannot train the respiratory system of the horse. The amount of air moved in and out by an unfit horse at a fixed speed will be the same as when that horse is fully fit.

When galloping, the blood pressure in the blood vessels within the horse’s lungs (referred to as pulmonary blood vessels) is 4-5 times greater than when at rest.

Increased pressure on the horse's breathing puts stress on the very thin walls of the blood vessels and can cause them to rupture. This bleeding, also referred to as exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), occurs deep within the lung tissues. Horses that bleed rarely show blood at the nostrils.

Viene perciò indetta una rassegna riservata ai puledri maschi e femmine nati e allevati in Sardegna nel 2018, 2019, 2020, appartenenti alle razze Anglo Arabo (Linea Sport) e Sella Italiano. Nell’ambito delle classifiche definitive della rassegna verranno selezionati i migliori puledri e le migliori puledre di 2 e 3 anni che, insieme alle migliori fattrici provenienti dai Nuclei di Salvaguardia e Selezione del 2020 con i propri puledri nati nel 2021, saranno chiamati a partecipare a Cavalli di Sardegna – Vetrina d’Elite dell’Allevamento Sardo che si terrà a Tanca Regia (Abbasanta) in seno all’evento Sardegna Jumping Tour 2021 nelle date del 26, 27 e 28 Ottobre 2021.
