SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary At the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary, we are pioneering new ways to care for beluga whales. Support conservation!

Discover our Visitor Centre, Puffin Rescue Centre, and aquarium showcasing Iceland's unique marine life. The Sanctuary is operated by the SEA LIFE Trust, a charity registered in England and Wales and CAF America approved. All money raised from ticket sales helps us to provide the best possible care for Little White and Little Grey, as well as the other animals we look after here at the Sanctuary.

Our Visitor Centre is open daily in summer season from April to October and on select dates in winter. The Centre includes Iceland´s only Puffin Rescue Centre and a native species aquarium. Puffin Rescue Centre – See our resident puffins, learn all about these amazing birds that inhabit the Vestmannaeyjar islands and hear about how we, along with the islanders, are helping to protect them. Our native species aquarium showcases some of the beautiful animals that share the belugas’ new home. Klettsvik Bay

Klettsvik Bay is across the harbour from our Visitor Centre and will be the new home for our resident belugas. When the belugas are in bay we run carefully managed boat trips to visit them from Vestmannaeyjar Harbour which allows you to view the belugas home from a discreet distance.

Meet the Team!! We’re starting off our new series with Raine, who joined the team in 2025…

What’s your role at the sanctuary, and what does a typical day look like for you? I’m the Marketing & Fundraising coordinator here at BWS. My day usually includes monitoring and creating content for our social media platforms, working with local tourism agencies who book visits to our sanctuary, taking and collecting photo and video media of our residents, and a handful of other meetings and community engagement activities throughout the day.

What drew you to working at an animal sanctuary specifically? As a child, I dreamed of being a zoologist but my path ended up leading me to social work where I’ve been the last 20 years. However, moving to Iceland meant leaving that behind. The Beluga Whale Sanctuary rekindled that original love I had for animals and I knew finding a position here was just always meant to be.

Do you have any pets of your own… and do they know you work with birds and whales all day? I have two cats, Vincent and Scout, who moved with me here from the USA. They may not know I work beside beluga whales but they definitely know about puffins because we’ve had several pufflings stay with us overnight during puffling season!
Which sanctuary resident has stolen your heart? Definitely Moli, our Common Guillemot. He lives with our puffin colony and has the biggest personality, always greeting his humans with a bow and a squawk.

Today is Endangered Species Day! Organizations around the world are bringing awareness to the thousands of currently threatened or endangered species and celebrating those that have recovered as a result of global conservation efforts.

Our beloved Atlantic Puffin is one such species, currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to rapid population decline.
