Today, 23 April, marks Sumardagurinn fyrsti (First Day of Summer) — an Icelandic public holiday celebrating the traditional beginning of summer. Rooted in the old Norse calendar, the day symbolizes the shift from winter to longer, brighter days.

Summer is off to a beautiful start, with sunny and calm weather setting the tone for the season ahead.

Even in a land where the weather can be unpredictable, Sumardagurinn fyrsti remains a celebration of optimism, renewal, and the simple pleasure of welcoming summer.

We’ve had plenty of snow over the past couple of weeks, including during Easter, but now the winds have shifted and warmer weather is in the forecast for this week—so things are about to change. These scenic photos were taken by Laimonas Rimkus during Easter.

Today marks the Spring (Vernal) Equinox, when the sun crosses the Earth’s equator, bringing nearly equal hours of daylight and darkness across the globe. From this point on, daylight increases a little each day here in North Iceland, leading up to the Midnight Sun on June 21, when we enjoy about 24 hours of daylight.

Longer, brighter days are on the way – the perfect time to start dreaming of summer on Hrísey Island.

Happy Bolludagur! 🇮🇸

Today in Iceland, we’re celebrating Bun Day by indulging in these heavenly cream-filled buns — a sweet pre-Lenten treat that no one can resist! 😋

Bolludagur, or Bun Day, falls on the Monday before Lent and is part of Iceland’s festive pre-Lenten traditions. The word Bolludagur literally translates to “Bun Day,” and it’s a day dedicated to enjoying bollur — soft buns filled with whipped cream and often topped with chocolate or icing. Families and friends gather to enjoy these delicious buns, making it a joyful and indulgent celebration.

The significance of Bolludagur lies in its connection to the period preceding Lent. Lent is a time of reflection, fasting, and preparation for Easter in many Christian traditions. Bolludagur, along with other pre-Lenten celebrations, gives people the chance to enjoy a little indulgence and sweetness before the more restrained period of Lent begins.

So go ahead, enjoy a bun (or two!) and celebrate the Icelandic way! 🥳

A soft layer of snow greeted us early this morning, quietly covering the island in white. There’s something special about those calm winter moments.

The forecast shows more snow on the way, along with colder temperatures in the coming days. It’s time to enjoy crisp walks, warm layers, and the beauty of the season.

Stay warm and enjoy the snowy days ahead. ❄️

We are enjoying beautiful weather these days on Hrísey Island. The daylight hours have grown steadily since the winter solstice (around 21st December), when the island had only a few hours of daylight. Today, the sun rises at about 10:01 AM and sets around 4:52 PM, giving us nearly 7 hours of daylight — a welcome change from the short, dark days of mid‑winter.

This week, the Northern Lights have put on a spectacular show.
The aurora borealis has been glowing intensely, even displaying rare red hues due to powerful solar activity. When the Sun releases bursts of charged particles during solar storms, they are carried toward Earth by the solar wind. Guided by our planet’s magnetic field, these particles collide with gases high in the atmosphere, producing the mesmerizing lights we see in the sky.
