On the occasion of World Lion Day, 10 August 2025. Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) organized a session on lions to raise awareness about the species and their conservation. The program featured insightful discussions from zoo officials highlighting the ecological importance of lions, their care and conservation efforts. At IGZP, Currently, two Asiatic lions are housed named Patwad, a 12 year old male and Kumari, a 4.5-year old female. Patwad was brought to IGZP from Sakkarbaug Zoological Park in Junagadh, Gujarat, on 23rd August 2019, while Kumari arrived
from the same zoo exactly four years later, on 22nd August 2023. Since then, a bond was formed between the two lions. They are often seen lounging together in the shade, playfully nudging one another and enjoying their space side by side.

A heartwarming moment at Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, our Red-Necked Wallaby has welcomed a joey and the little one has now started peeking out of the pouch!

Did you know? A joey is born tiny, blind and hairless, and it crawls into the mother’s pouch right after birth. It stays safely inside for about 6 to 7 months and only after that it slowly starts coming out to explore the world just like this one!

This joey is a part of our successful breeding program and we’re so happy to see it healthy and active under the loving care of its mom.

You can spot this adorable duo near the Ostrich enclosure & don’t miss it during your visit to the zoo!

On the occasion of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, 26 July 2025, a collaborative field session titled “Roots of Vizag: Mangroves and Us” was organized by IGZP, WCTRE, DHAN Foundation, ICFRE–FRCCE and YouCan. The session aimed to explore the ecological diversity and significance of the mangrove ecosystem at the Gosthani River mouth, located near Bheemunipatnam, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

The Gosthani River, originating from the Ananthagiri Hills, flows approximately 120 kilometers before forming an estuarine ecosystem at its confluence with the Bay of Bengal. This estuary, rich in biodiversity, supports a variety of faunal and floral species. Participants observed the presence of 30 avian species, along with a diverse assemblage of intertidal fauna including Telescopium, Asian backwater clam, Ring-legged fiddler crab red, Motley fiddler crab, Brown crab, Mud creeper and Viola land hermit crab, along with visible egg pouches attached to pneumatophores and prop roots addressed by Mr. Vivek N Rathod, avian enthusiast and board member of WCTRE.

A significant faunal observation was the sighting of Cerberus rynchops (Dog-faced Water Snake), a rear-fanged, mildly venomous, semi-aquatic snake species.Characterized by its dark brown coloration with a striped white underbelly, this snake can grow up to 1 meter in length and serves as a bioindicator of habitat quality and prey abundance.

Among the mangrove species identified were Avicennia marina (Grey Mangrove) and Rhizophora mucronata (Red Mangrove). These species are vital to coastal ecosystems playing key roles in shoreline stabilization, erosion prevention, sediment deposition, pollutant filtration and functioning as blue carbon sinks to mitigate climate change impacts. These ecological functions were elaborated by Mrs. Gayathri Girish, Technical Assistant, ICFRE–FRCCE.

Participants observed traditional fishing practices on the opposite bank, reflecting the strong link between mangroves and coastal livelihoods. A plantation drive was conducted with local communities and participants introducing key species like Bruguiera and Rhizophora to restore the habitat.

They’re feathery, bold and often mistaken for butterflies—but they’re not. They’re moths and this week is all about celebrating them! It's National Moth Week and it's time to notice these quiet, fascinating creatures that come alive after sunset. Some shine brightly under lights, catching your eye with their colors, while others are experts at hiding, blending into tree bark or leaves so well, you might walk right past them without knowing.

Unlike butterflies, moths usually fly at night, rest with their wings flat and have soft, feathery antennae. Over time, we’ve spotted so many kinds from big, bold hawkmoths to tiny ones that look just like dried leaves. Every moth has its own story and this week is your chance to find one near you. If you see a moth, take a picture and tag us and you might get featured on our social media and be a part of this beautiful celebration of moth diversity.

It's World Snake Day, July 16!
Snakes play a vital role in our environment. Though often misunderstood or feared, snakes are important predators that help control pest populations and maintain ecological balance. They are incredibly diverse in size, shape, behavior and are found in forests, grasslands, wetlands, deserts and even urban areas. Snakes do not have eyelids they protect their eyes with a clear scale and they use their forked tongues to sense smells in the air. Most snakes are non-aggressive and prefer to avoid conflict. On this day, let’s replace fear with fascination, learn about their incredible adaptations and understand why protecting them is essential for a healthy planet.

Do visit the Reptile Enclosure at the zoo and observe these amazing species up close to better appreciate their beauty and importance in nature.

On the occasion of World Chimpanzee Day, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) conducted a session titled "A Day with Chikitha – The Chimpanzee's Tale", celebrating our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. Participants had a unique opportunity to understand the intelligent and social nature of chimpanzees through the story of Chikitha, IGZP's beloved female chimpanzee. Visitors got an insightful glimpse into her daily routines, behaviors and emotional expressions. A key highlight of the session was the interactive talk with the Chimpanzee Keeper, who shared firsthand experiences and fascinating facts about Chikitha’s habits, diet, enrichment activities and her strong bond with the animal care staff. Through this engaging and educational experience, the program aimed to raise awareness about the importance of chimpanzee conservation and the need to protect their rapidly declining wild populations.
