International Day of Forests'
21st March,2026
Forests and Economies 🌿
Forests serve as essential engines for economic prosperity, driving the growth of sustainable bioeconomies while securing global livelihoods. By providing a reliable stream of food, fuel, and income, they bridge the gap between human development and environmental health. 'World Wildlife Day 2026- Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihood' highlights that medicinal and aromatic plants are the foundational "pharmacy" of the natural world, supporting both animal health and habitat integrity. Many wildlife species, from primates to birds, engage in 'Zoopharmacognosy' by using these specific plants to self-medicate and treat parasites or infections. These plants also supports biodiversity by providing critical food and nesting sites for pollinators like bees and bats on which the entire ecosystem depends. By promoting sustainable livelihoods through plant conservation, we can reduce the human pressure on forests, indirectly protecting the habitats of endangered fauna. Ultimately, the 2026 theme reminds us that we can conserve the iconic wildlife by safeguarding the floral heritage that sustains their physical well-being.
