For 2 decades now, Thane CPCA , formerly well known as Thane SPCA, has been working in the district of Thane to alleviate the sufferings of ownerless animals, inflicted on them by humans, nature or environment. In the summer of 2002, a handful of animal lovers took upon themselves, the onus of bringing to street animals, the care and attention they deserve. The working group started as caretakers

on the streets of Thane, went on to build a hospital with the support of 4 animal ambulances and a 26 member staff team. An initiative that began to address the health and cruelty issues being meted out to street animals, has been now elevated to regulation and interaction with the Government sector and fellow organisations in the voluntary sector to ensure animals get their rights. This is done by a core group of Trustees and Patron members by setting high operating standards set by selfless principles. We aspire to build faith and trust between the Government and Non-Government sector which will be the only way to bring full relief to suffering animals. The norms for foundation of the organization were set in their Vision and Mission Statement along with its Objectives. The hallmark of this organization was and always will be honesty, transparency, good governance, public disclosure and accountability. After these hours, only emergencies are attended inside the hospital premises. Our Hospital is open between 9 AM and 9 PM for OPD patients, every day of the year. However, only our ambulance staff are allowed to leave the premises between 10 AM and 6:30 PM for attending rescue calls. Our night staff will not leave the hospital premises to attend calls between 6:30 PM and 10:00 AM. Please co-operate.Our Hospital is open for visits from 4 PM to 5 PM on all days except Public Holidays. Please contact our office on 09322271966 for an appointment in case you want to visit at a different time.

Thanks to modern medicine system, diagnosis and treatment options for cancer in companion animals are similar to humans, involving a veterinarian or veterinary oncologist and potentially including surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. The one thing that is needed is for the caretakers to be vigilant towaards any changes in their animals.

Yet another magic from Dr. and his assistant .

On a busy morning at Thane CPCA Animal Hospital, we received a distress call. A monkey had fallen from a building and was bleeding from the nose. Without delay, our team rushed to the site, safely rescued the injured monkey and brought him in for treatment.

Clinical examination revealed facial impact injuries resulting in epistaxis (nose bleeding) and bilateral blepharitis (swelling of both eyelids). With a week of dedicated care and treatment, the monkey made a full recovery and was released back to his troop. Healthy and free once again ❤️

Unfortunately, such incidents are becoming increasingly common due to the growing human–wildlife interface. Rapid urbanization and habitat loss often force monkeys to adapt to city environments, leaping across buildings, scavenging for food, and navigating man-made structures that pose serious risks of falls, electrocution, and accidents.

Surprising, isn't it? That these creatures of the sky are so important for the ecology ? As the Bird Week 2025 rolls into yet another one next
year, let us make a pledge to celebrate these magnificent beings all year round. If we do not realise the moral and ethical importance of appreciating them, caring for them and conserving them, it will be too late for us to survive in the long run.

Bird Week Special: Shaheen Falcon — Adapting to the Urban Skies

A Shaheen Falcon was recently brought to Thane CPCA Animal Hospital after being found in a dull and depressed state by a local from Lodha complex, Thane. On arrival, the box was crawling with parasites and the bird itself was severely infested with lice causing significant irritation and restlessness.

Microscopic examination revealed the presence of chewing lice (Mallophaga) aptly named for the relentless irritation they inflict. These are the ectoparasites that feed on feathers and skin debris. The infestation likely occured after preying on a pigeon or poultry bird carrying the parasites.l

What’s equally fascinating is the ecological adaptation of Shaheen Falcons. Once confined to cliffs and open landscapes, they are now increasingly seen nesting on tall urban buildings, using high-rises as vantage points for hunting. This shift reflects how certain species are adapting to urban ecosystems amidst rapid habitat loss.

This Bird Week, let's appreciate these incredible raptors that continue to soar high even amidst the changing landscape we have built. 🦅
