🐄 BOVINE ACTINOMYCOSIS (LUMPY JAW) – A SERIOUS CHRONIC DISEASE IN CATTLE

Bovine Actinomycosis, commonly known as Lumpy Jaw, is a slow-progressing but economically devastating bacterial disease that mainly affects the jaw bones of cattle, especially the lower mandible. If not detected and treated early, it can lead to severe feeding difficulties, weight loss, and early culling.

🔬 CAUSE

🦠 Caused by the bacterium Actinomyces bovis
✔️ Normally lives harmlessly in the mouth and rumen
❗ Becomes dangerous when it enters tissues through:

•Sharp or coarse feeds 🌾

•Thorns and rough pasture

•Mouth injuries during tooth eruption

•Oral wounds from foreign bodies

🧬 HOW THE DISEASE DEVELOPS (PATHOGENESIS)

🔹 Bacteria enter damaged oral tissues
🔹 Spread slowly to the jawbone
🔹 Cause chronic bone infection (osteomyelitis)
🔹 Results in hard, immovable jaw swellings that gradually increase in size

👉 The swelling is usually painless at first, which delays detection in many cases.

⚠️ CLINICAL SIGNS

🚩 Hard, firm swelling on the lower or upper jaw
🚩 Jaw enlargement and facial deformity 🦴
🚩 Difficulty chewing and swallowing feed 😣
🚩 Drooling of saliva 🤤
🚩 Loose or missing teeth
🚩 Progressive weight loss and poor body condition 📉
🚩 Reduced milk yield and growth rate 🥛⬇️

⛔ In advanced cases, animals may starve despite feed availability.

🧪 DIAGNOSIS

🩺 Based on:

•Typical hard jaw swelling

•Gradual disease progression

🔬 Confirmation may include:

•Needle aspiration showing thick pus with “sulfur granules”

•Radiography showing bone destruction

•Laboratory examination if needed

💊 TREATMENT

✅ Early treatment gives the best results

💉 Sodium iodide (IV or oral) – treatment of choice

💊 Long-acting antibiotics:

•Penicillin

•Oxytetracycline

🥣 Supportive care:

•Soft, palatable feeds

•Mineral and energy supplementation

❌ Advanced cases with severe bone damage usually have poor response to treatment.

🚫 PREVENTION & CONTROL

🛡️ Avoid sharp, coarse, or contaminated feeds
🌱 Provide high-quality pasture and feeds
🩹 Treat mouth wounds early
🚷 Isolate affected animals to reduce contamination
🧼 Maintain good housing and feeding hygiene

📉 ECONOMIC IMPACT

💰 Reduced milk production
💰 Poor growth and weight loss
💰 Increased treatment costs
💰 Premature culling of valuable animals

🟢 KEY MESSAGE TO FARMERS

🔔 Lumpy Jaw is NOT just a cosmetic problem.
⏱️ Early detection and immediate treatment save both the animal and money.

📞 Consult a veterinarian as soon as jaw swelling is noticed.

🧠🐄 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) – “Mad Cow Disease”

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) is a highly fatal, progressive neurological disease of cattle caused by abnormal prion proteins. These prions destroy brain tissue, giving it a spongy appearance, and once symptoms appear, the disease is always fatal.

🔬 Cause & Disease Mechanism

🧬 BSE is caused by misfolded prion proteins, not bacteria or viruses.
🍖 Historically associated with feeding cattle meat-and-bone meal (MBM) contaminated with prions.
🔥 Prions are extremely resistant to heat, disinfectants, and normal cooking or sterilization methods.

🧠 How BSE Affects the Brain

•Progressive degeneration of the central nervous system

•Formation of microscopic holes in brain tissue (spongiform change)

•Severe disruption of normal nerve function

•Gradual loss of motor control and behavior regulation

⚠️ Clinical Signs in Cattle

•Signs usually appear in adult cattle (4–6 years) due to the long incubation period:

•Nervousness, anxiety, aggression 😟

•Hypersensitivity to sound, light, or touch 🔊💡

•Loss of coordination (ataxia) and staggering gait 🚶‍♂️

•Tremors and muscle twitching

•Abnormal posture and difficulty rising

•Reduced milk production 🥛⬇️

•Progressive weight loss despite normal appetite ⚖️

•Recumbency followed by death ☠️

⏳ Incubation Period

⏱️ Very long incubation period of 2–8 years

➡️ Animals may appear healthy for years while the disease silently progresses.

🧪 Diagnosis

❌ No reliable test in live animals

✅ Confirmed after death through laboratory examination of brain tissue:

°Histopathology

°Immunohistochemistry

°Rapid prion detection assays

🚫 Treatment & Prognosis

❌ No treatment

❌ No vaccine

🔴 100% fatal once clinical signs develop

🧍‍♂️ Public Health Significance

⚠️ BSE is a zoonotic risk:

°Linked to variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease (vCJD) in humans

°Infection occurs through consumption of contaminated beef products, especially:

°Brain

°Spinal cord

°Nervous tissues (Specified Risk Materials – SRMs)

🛡️ Prevention & Control Measures (Global Standards 🌍)

🚫 Strict ban on meat-and-bone meal in ruminant feeds

🧾 Full feed traceability and quality assurance

🔥 Immediate culling and safe disposal of affected animals

🧪 Continuous surveillance and monitoring programs

🚧 Removal of Specified Risk Materials (SRMs) from the food chain

🧑‍⚕️ Strong veterinary inspection and biosecurity enforcement

🌱 Importance of Safe Feeding Practices

✅ Feeding cattle high-quality, plant-based, and well-regulated feeds is essential for:

•Disease prevention

•Herd health and productivity

•Protection of public health

📌 Key Message

BSE may be rare, but its impact is devastating.
Prevention through safe feed sourcing, strict regulation, and responsible livestock management is the only effective protection.

PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants) can silently destroy an entire goat herd if ignored.
High fever, mouth ulcers, nasal discharge, diarrhea, and breathing difficulty are early warning signs you must never miss.
Early vaccination, strict hygiene, and fast veterinary care can save lives, livelihoods, and food security.
Awareness today = Protection tomorrow.
Let’s protect our goats and strengthen animal health.

Gram-Negative Mastitis is one of the leading causes of sudden milk loss and emergency cases in dairy cows.
Most infections start from the environment — dirty bedding, wet floors, contaminated water and poor milking hygiene.
Early detection, proper sanitation, vaccination, and clean housing can dramatically reduce losses and protect herd health.
Healthy cows mean healthy milk and better farm profitability.
