UN VOTE CALLS FOR AN END TO THE US EMBARGO ON CUBA

The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on Oct 28 by 130 votes to 17, with 25 abstentions, according to UN Meetings Coverage.

Support fell from 165 votes in favour last year. The vote is a diplomatic call for change, not an announcement that the embargo has ended.

Finland's president says his call with Vladimir Putin was prepared in consultation with Ukraine and the United States.

Alexander Stubb and Norway's prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, spoke with Putin on Oct 27. Their joint statement says they urged an end to the war and continued support for Ukraine. They spoke for their own countries, not Europe as a whole.

The call is a diplomatic contact, not a peace agreement. Reuters reports that the Kremlin's readout showed no shift from its stated position.

Ukraine and Russia began a local ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in the Kherson region, at 3 a.m. Kyiv time on Oct 27, per AP. Officials on both sides say it is meant to let a humanitarian mission reach the town. Reports say First Lady Melania Trump helped broker it.

Trump says a US-Canada trade deal will be reached "pretty soon", per AFP. He spoke at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan on Sunday. Tariffs imposed after trade talks broke down in August cover about $20 billion of goods, AFP reports.

A federal appeals court panel questioned the Justice Department's request to set aside ballots from a list of about 20,000 suspected noncitizens on California's voting rolls, per POLITICO and AP.

The 9th Circuit heard arguments Sunday but did not issue a ruling. The Trump administration says the ballots may have been cast by noncitizens; California says federal law does not let the DOJ change how the state screens voters, per POLITICO.

Zelenskyy says Ukraine's Starlink drone links are back at full speed.

Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to pre-restriction speeds after SpaceX suddenly limited battlefield Starlink use earlier this week, he said. Restoration began overnight and speeds were sufficient by morning. Ukraine's Defence Minister confirmed full satellite links for drones are back, per AP.
