Isn’t it beautiful how some stories aren’t planned, but guided? Just like Bella finding her way home. 🧡

Every Bella on the streets of Delhi deserves the same chance - a safe home, a loving family, a second life.

Across India, humans and street animals have shared the same spaces for generations. They live where they were born, form bonds in their neighbourhoods, and play an important role in the city’s ecosystem. Our compassion is what turns this shared space into a shared home. A bowl of water in the heat, a safe corner to rest, a kind word instead of a stone - these small acts build trust, safety, and dignity. For street animals, our willingness to care can mean the difference between surviving and truly living.

And if our acts of kindness and care towards them disappear, so does a part of what makes us human.

This Independence Day, while we celebrate our freedom, let’s remember those who still live without it. For our street dogs, true azaadi means full bellies, safe streets, kind hands, and a life without fear.

The streets are their home too. And when we choose compassion - when we feed, protect, and coexist, we make our city freer for everyone. Because freedom means little if it’s not for every being who calls this land home.

Our office dogs are the heart of HUFT - they came as strangers, but stayed as family. Pinky, Sultan, Elsie and Chelsie have been part of our days for years now - greeting us at the door, sleeping through meetings, demanding belly rubs during lunch breaks. They didn’t arrive because someone “placed” them here. They stayed because they belonged.

It’s the same with so many animals we care for. Across India, our 200+ dogs and cats remind us that street animals are not outsiders. They’re part of the places they live in, the lives they touch, and the communities they quietly make warmer.

They know the smell of every corner, the sound of every door, the faces that feed them, the voices that call their name. Moving them takes away more than just a place - it takes away their home. And just like us, they deserve to keep it.

Yesterday, a decision was made that could change the lives of thousands of street dogs in Delhi NCR.
They will be taken from the only home they have ever known and put into shelters that don’t have the space, the food, or the care to keep them alive.

Why? Because they’re seen as a threat. But, if you’ve ever stopped to scratch a street dog’s head, you know, most are friendly. They are gentle souls, shaped by the kindness (or cruelty) of the humans they meet. They are part of our neighbourhoods, our mornings, our lives. Taking them away won’t make our streets safer. It will only make them emptier.

We need compassion-led solutions, not fear-led decisions. Because this city is their home too.🧡

In May 2025, an animal rescuer Manavi Rai () got a midnight call about a critically injured dog. He was barely hanging on, infested with maggots, with insects having entered his nose, mouth, and even his trachea. Another week, and he may not have survived. But Manavi didn’t give up. She stepped in and gave him a fighting chance.

On 21st July, he was born again, and they named him Janam. Today, Janam is slowly healing. His eyes have been saved, he responds to his name, and every day, he continues to beat the odds.

Janam’s recovery will take time - multiple surgeries, ongoing treatment, and months of care. That’s when (one of the community members) adopted and fully sponsored his journey ahead. While he may not be able to bring Janam home, he will be looked after with all the love and attention he needs.

Janam, Manavi, and Riyan’s story is a reminder that you don’t have to adopt to make a difference. Sometimes, being part of their journey is just as powerful as bringing them home.
