Care options for your puppy

Dogs are very social and love spending time with you, whether they're playing a game with you or just curling up next to you on the couch. So when it comes time for you to go to work or leave the house for long periods of time, it can make your dog lonely or anxious. Try not to cure your dog's anxiety problem by giving him even more attention—you'll only create a vicious cycle of neediness. Likewise, never get angry when your dog acts clingy as you prepare to leave.

Stay-at-home puppy
Your puppy will be healthy and happy spending the day alone as long as he is exercised in the morning and evening.
Give him toys to play with while you’re away, access to fresh water, and puppy-proof your home.
Try to keep him in an enclosed area, when you're out. Dogs are den animals, so they feel safer in their own small space such as a large crate. This will protect both your puppy and your belongings.
Before you leave, bury toys and hide treats where he can find and "dig" them up. Keeping a TV or radio on can also provide "company" for your pooch.

Day care
Helps with socialisation and provides an environment which gives them the opportunity to exercise while you’re away.

Dog walkers
Arrange for a professional dog walker to come to your home when you’re out. This may happen once or twice a day, and may involve other dogs.

Pet sitters
Arrange for a sitter to drop into your home once or twice a day to feed and play with your pet. This person can be a friend or neighbour. Be sure expectations are spelled out and emergency contact information is exchanged.

What to keep in mind
Ask for references for dog walkers or day care.
Protect your puppy. Have up-to-date ID tags and/or a microchip.
Leave your contact information with your puppy’s caregiver for emergencies.
When selecting a day care or dog walker make sure they require proof of immunization, screen dogs for good temperament, and put only compatible dogs together.
Ensure that your puppy will be walked during the day at day care. Ensure facility enclosures and play areas are secure so your puppy can’t escape or be stolen.
If your puppy will be staying at home he should be walked just before you leave for the day and as soon as you get home.

How do I make my home pet-ready?

The change in a puppy’s life - leaving his natural family and moving to a completely new world - will be both exciting and stressful. Here is how you can ensure a smooth transition:

Introduce your puppy to your family
Introduce family members one at a time. Do not scare your new pet.
Children will naturally want to play with the new puppy, pick him up and pet him. Do this carefully at first.
He will get used to the surroundings and seek out contact as he grows.

Bedding down your puppy
The right puppy accessories are very important! A puppy needs a private place of his own. It could be a warm bed in a cosy corner - away from draughts, perhaps in the kitchen or living room.
Puppies chew everything, so the material you use to make a bed for your puppy should not be harmful for him. You could use a cardboard carton with the front removed, as a short-term measure. Line the bottom with newspaper or a washable blanket.
As your dog grows, it is recommended that you buy a special, hard-vinyl dog bed.

Are kennels needed?
If you do want to use a dog kennel, set it up in the spring or summer so that the puppy will gradually get used to his environment before winter.
The kennel should be about double the width of the adult, fully grown dog.
Keep the kennel dry and raised from the ground. Ideally, the roof or one of the sides should also be hinged to allow easy cleaning.
Use good, warm bedding within.

Managing Obesity in Dogs
In the recent past, there has been a great splurge in the number of obesity cases reported in pets. Recent studies indicate that 9 out of 10 pet owners don't know the healthy amount of calories their pets should be having.
Canine obesity is a serious problem seen not just in India but globally, in fact it has become so common that we have come to see overweight dogs as normal. With the change in our lifestyle, we have become more complacent in our everyday habits of healthy nutrition and regular exercise. This, believe it or not has had a direct effect on our pet’s lifestyle as well.

Health Issues Associated With Obesity in Pets
1. Exercise Intolerance
2. Arthritis
3. Hormonal Imbalance
4. Difficulty in breathing
5. Lowered Immunity
6. Increased heat sensitivity
7. Diabetes Mellitus

How to manage an obese dog?
Before we tackle this question it is first very important to identify the main cause behind your dog’s obesity, which more or less boils down to two simple factors:
NUTRITION
and
EXERCISE.

Feed a Complete & Balanced Diet
Diet plays a crucial role in managing obesity in pets. Most Pet parents are aware that balanced nutrition is fundamental to achieving normal growth and development in the growing dog, but there is common tendency to overfeed or to over supplement the diet. It is very important therefore to closely evaluate the amount of calories your dog is consuming on a daily basis.
While feeding your dog it is also very important to keep his body type, breed and age in mind as nutritional requirements of dogs varies with all these factors. This is where home prepared diets becomes confusing and insufficient. Home prepared food have a problem from managing the right balance of macro & micro nutrients keeping nutritional needs of a dog in mind.
Commercial dog foods like Pedigree are complete & balanced however, knowing how many calories a given commercial dog food contains in a serving is also critical. Sometimes the calories are given per cup, and other times per gram, and sometimes both. Follow the feeding guidelines on a bag of food, and always check to see if the food is complaint to your dog breed type and age range. Avoid unrestricted access to food.
Considering these, it is very important to implement good and accurate feeding practices that help you balance your dog’s diet in a healthy manner.

Proper Exercise Schedule
The next step is to make sure that your dog is getting plenty of exercise and burning calories each day. Be careful, if your dog is carrying excess weight, and too much walking can hurt his joints. A better way to exercise your dog, at least until he loses some weight is to take him swimming, so he doesn’t put any stress on his joints.
Being lean can add years to your dog’s life, and being obese can cause a myriad of health problems and significant joint pain. Our dogs can’t join a gym or eat better on their own; it’s up to us to make healthy life choices on their behalf and do our bit.

Beagle
The Beagle should look like a miniature Foxhound, and is solid for the size. The Beagle’s moderate size enables the ability to follow on foot. Beagles can also be carried, and they can scurry around in thick underbrush. Their close hard coat protects them from underbrush. Their moderate build enables them to nimbly traverse rough terrain. The Beagle’s amiable personality allows this breed to get along with other dogs and to be a wonderful pet. Beagles are noted for their melodious bay. The deep muzzle allows more room for olfactory receptors, aiding the Beagle’s uncanny sense of smell.
