What are show dogs like at home as pets? They’re wonderful companions. Because they’re bred to meet specific standards, their temperaments tend to be consistent, predictable, and easy to live with, just like Ch. Pluto MW24, INKC Dog of the Year 2024.

26/04/2026

Pluto was originally brought home simply as a family pet, with no intention of ever entering the show ring. But when an opportunity arose to compete at a prestigious INKC Championship dog show, his family decided to give it a try. At just 11 months old, Pluto impressed the judge and made a remarkable debut. He carried that momentum into his next show the same year, achieving similar success—and ultimately earning the coveted INKC Dog of the Year 2024 title.

On the lighter side . . .

I went to Tractor Supply to buy a bag of food for my dog. Already in line, a woman behind me asked me if I had a dog. I stared at her… (Why would I be buying dog food, right?) So I told her no, I don’t have a dog, that I was starting the dog food diet again, and that I probably shouldn’t because I ended up in the hospital the last time, but I lost 15 pounds!

I told her it was the perfect diet and that all you have to do is carry the kibble in your pockets and eat one or two every time you feel hungry. I have to mention that practically everyone in line was interested in my story.

Then she asked me if I ended up in the hospital because the dog food had poisoned me. I answered, of course not! I was admitted because I bent down to smell the back end of a bulldog and got hit by a truck.

I thought the man behind her was going to p*e his pants because he was laughing so hard.

With everything going on in our dog world, we need to laugh more!

Does your dog have what it takes to be the next INKC Dog of the Year?

Sound advice.

Sound advice.

My theory on the doodle explosion, after many years of raising and training standard poodles, is that it takes a level of confidence in oneself for a man to own a poodle because of the frou frou rep standard poodles have wearing the continental haircut. The truth is, what the men are put off by is not the poodle, but the haircut. You can put a teddy bear haircut on your poodle and voila it looks like what everyone has their doodle in. There is simply no benefit to getting a designer mutt.

We need this kind of compulsory orientation or qualification program here, to ensure responsible and knowledgeable dog ownership. But its purpose will not be served if it is run under government agencies like the AWB.

South Korea has taken a decisive step in its Animal Welfare Plan (2025-2029) to curb the abandonment of pets. 👏🏻

From now on, anyone who wants to adopt a dog or cat must complete a prior educational program. This course not only teaches about the responsibilities of having an animal, but also evaluates whether the person is truly prepared for the commitment.

The plan also strengthens identification with mandatory registrations and expands the teaching of animal welfare to higher educational levels. 🇰🇷🐕

From our archives (Indian Express, 08-12-1986):

Partap Sharma with his prize-winning GSD, fondly called 'Ranjha'. Although the dog is not well posed here, one can see the correct straight back, angle of croup, unexaggerated angulation, and broad thighs -- the essential features of a GSD that, in subsequent years, were reprehensibly replaced by a curved back, steep croup and a hyena profile.

Socialization is possible in pups only between 4 to 16 weeks. Do not waste this slot in your puppy's life by waiting 'until vaccinations are over'!

It doesn’t mean playing.
It never did.
“Socialisation” has a lot to answer for.

It has a far more important meaning, and it’s often missed because of that one word.

It’s not all about interactions with other puppies or dogs. That’s a very small part of it.
Yet we get stuck thinking socialisation = play.

That’s the issue.

Socialisation is the whole world around them.
The one we’re used to. They’re not.

And if we reduce it to just play with other dogs?
Problems are on the way.

Socialisation is about teaching safety.
Creating safety.
Letting your puppy feel safe.

Even if they’ve never seen a plane or heard a crowd, the goal is the same.
Slow, careful exposure so they can take it in without overwhelming them.

We forget, or maybe don’t fully appreciate, how much they need to get used to in our world.

Socialisation is careful, positive exposure.
Acclimation.
And yes, a level of "neutrality".

Wet grass.
Stairs.
Rain on their head.
A cat passing by.
A scooter moving past.

The goal was never just play.
