So many pet parents ask me to help them find a mate for their dog, because they think that breeding the dog is a must. But that is far from the truth.
If you want to mate your dog, then please think about it a hundred times.
Here are 3 common myths about wanting your dog to have puppies.
1. My dog will not be complete if she doesn't have a litter at least once in her life time. She will become complete if she becomes a mother
MYTH DEBUNKED - Say that to the millions of women in this world who choose not to give birth to children. Are they incomplete in anyway? Female dogs that do not have a litter at all in their entire lifetime can still be happy complete dogs. If you dog suffers from multiple false pregnancies, neutering her will be more helpful than allowing her to have a litter. Being pregnant and the act of giving birth is not fun- its a pain - literally and figuratively! Why would you impose that on a dog you love?
2.. I want mini versions of my beautiful, stunning dog to inhabit this planet.
MYTH DEBUNKED- There is no way you can predict what the pups will turn out to be like. Only cloning will result in an identical version of your dog and that too is completely not advisable. Your pup could end up more like the dad than the mum or a weird combination of both. Stop creating more puppies in this world for your own selfish reasons.
In addition, dogs should not just be bred for their looks, but only dogs with a clear bill of genetic health issues and excellent temperament should be considered. If your dog doesn't have any of that, then do not breed.
3. I want to make money by selling puppies.
MYTH DEBUNKED - Good breeders spend more than they earn and breeding is something you cannot do randomly. You must know enough before you have a litter, because a lot can go wrong when the mum delivers. Puppies are time consuming, can be messy and noisy.
Tons of people breed their dogs and later realise there are no homes for their puppies. The dogs end up paying the price for their ignorance by being sold to pet shops, dealers or other breeders at cheap rates. If you yet choose to breed your dog, write down a list of 15 people who will guaranteed buy your pups. If you cannot, then do not have puppies. There are enough unwanted dogs in this world as it is.
There is a lot more to this topic but the bottom line is - THINK BEFORE YOU MATE YOUR DOG!
