Physical exercise for a dog is important. Keeping your dog fit means aging will be easier down the road, with less arthritis and pain. But did you know exercising your dog’s mind is just as important for their quality of life? It’s true! No one likes to be bored, especially your dog.

Teach Tricks to Exercise Your Dog’s Mind

Teaching your dog tricks is a great way to exercise their mind. It keeps them focused and they really do enjoy it. My boy, Dodo, loves tricks so much that he will anticipate which one I will ask for next! Your dog wants to please you, it’s part of their nature.

Lay down
Paw (get creative, ask for each one! Like playing Patty Cake)
Rollover
Crawl
Whisper

Don’t forget to use positive reinforcement when teaching your dog tricks, usually by giving them a treat (pieces of their kibble works great) and a “Good Boy.”

𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒆𝒕𝒄𝒉

Fetch is thoroughly gratifying for a dog. It allows them to show off their athletic prowess, appease their instincts, bask in their undivided attention, and lastly, it helps to burn off some of that never-ending energy. They’re naturally good at it and we know how they like to show off!

Playing fetch is fun and healthy for both you and your pet. But not all dogs learn it immediately. Some dogs don’t understand fetch at all, while others instinctively love to chase things, or your pet may love to chase but not retrieve. Playing fetch can lead to more exercise and bonding between you and your dog.

If your dog doesn’t understand fetch or seems disinterested in retrieving toys, begin with a few basics:

Introduce the toy with a tug-of-war game
Put treats inside of a toy to make it more enticing
Tease your dog with a toy to gain his attention

Once the dog is interested in the toy, start by throwing the toy a few feet. As your dog catches on, be sure to show your enthusiasm so they want to please you by playing more. Slowly increase the distance you throw the toy until your dog understands the fun of chasing after something.

Don’t be discouraged if you have to pause and try again another day.

Walking your dog provides the mental stimulation and physical exercise that your dog needs to stay healthy. For you, it's also a great time to get outdoor exercise and bond with your canine companion. But it can be rather daunting when your dog constantly pulls on the leash. Teaching leash manners can be challenging because dogs move faster than us, are often full of energy, and excited about exploring the outdoors.
While walking on the leash may not feel natural to your dog at first, but it is possible to train your dog to not pull. There are different methods that you can use to train your dog. The goal is to eventually be able to walk with a loose leash instead of one that is pulled taut from beginning to end.

Positive Reinforcement helps the dog understand the way you train them. It is the best way of leash training your canine companion. One example would be, start the walk by going in one direction. If your dog pulls on the leash, stop walking, and wait. Call for him when he no longer pulls on the leash and says, "let's walk!" when he looks back at you. Turn the other direction and say "yes" with a treat when your dog catches up to you. Walk-in a new direction. As you're walking, praise and reward your dog frequently for every step they stay next to you. If you do this consistently, he'll learn that it's way more fun to stick close to you.

• Unlike cats that can thrive in an indoor-only environment, dogs need to walk on a daily basis, make sure to give them enough space and time to go lurking around, sniffing and smelling the environment.

1. 100% pure NATURAL Munchies dog chews’
