Battle of Scales and Feathers

In the wetlands of Mangalajodi in Odisha, a dramatic battle unfolds as an immature Brahminy Kite attempts to steal a meal – a water snake – from a Purple Heron. On the northern edge of Chilika Lake, Mangalajodi is a prime example of a community-protected reserve, where the local hunters have turned into conservationists making a living from eco-tourism. The lake is a haven for migratory waterfowl, and is critical to the ecological security of coastal Odisha. Photographer Krishnakant Mathuria was awarded the First Prize in the Landscape and Ecosystem category for this perfect frame of nature’s theatre.
