The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology (or Croc Bank) was the brain child of the legendary Romulus Whitaker and a handful of like-minded conservation visionaries who began work on the facility in 1976, in a desperate effort to save India’s dwindling crocodilian populations. Today, after more than 30 formidable years of cutting edge science and grassroots education, the Croc Ban

k remains a world leader in the field of frontline conservation and the preservation of natural landscapes. The Croc Bank currently consists of a large reptile park near Chennai, Southern India, and several field projects located throughout the subcontinent reaching as far afield as the Nicobar Islands. The zoo sees close to half a million visitors per year making it one of the most popular tourist attractions along the famous East Coast Road.

Another year of outreach, rescue, collaboration, and coexistence.

In 2025–26, the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust’s Snake Conservation & Snakebite Mitigation Project conducted 550 outreach programs across 10 states, reaching over 45,000 people through workshops, school programs, films, and awareness sessions. We also trained 400+ snake rescuers across 7 states, distributed rescue kits, and expanded collaborations with NGOs and government departments — thanks to the support of the Arvind Vithal Gandhi Foundation.

This year also saw the launch of the Naagam Initiative in Tamil Nadu, the expansion of the Snake Safety Programme in Madhya Pradesh, consultations in Assam and Meghalaya, and continued assistance for the SERPENT digital platform.

We were also grateful to receive support from to launch SAFE (Snake Awareness for Everyone), a new initiative focused on strengthening NGO networks and collaborative outreach efforts.

Snakebite remains one of the world’s most overlooked public health problems. We believe the real change is possible when communities, scientists, governments, and local experts work together.

For 35 incredible years, , Keeper Nagarathinnam (Payinthy) has been the heartbeat of our crocodile family at Madras Crocodile Bank. With every careful feeding, every watchful eye, and every story shared, he has safeguarded our scaly wonders and inspired generations.

We gathered yesterday to wish Keeper Payinthy all the best for his retirement. He spoke about his rigorous training on croc handling with Rom, and how he learned and applied new information as he went along.

All the best Payinthy Anna; enjoy some well-deserved rest and good times with your grandchildren! Your legacy roars on forever.
