WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR PARVO INFECTED DOG ?
Extensive supportive care has to be given, meaning taking care of every organ system in order to keep check and keep the patient alive long enough for an immune response to generate immunity. Basically treatment involves checking fluid loss, arresting bacterial infection and controlling nausea. Parvo ulcerates the stomach and small intestine which is the main cause for vomiting. Nausea is very uncomfortable to puppies and they further deteriorate in health dur to lack of oral feeding.

HOW DOGS GET INFECTED AND WHAT DOES IT DO TO THE DOG?

The time period between virus entering into dogs body and appearance of symptoms is called incubation period, it is 4-6 days in this case. Whether or not the dog gets the disease depends on 3 important things
1) Dogs capacity to defend the diseases (vaccinated or not)
2) How many viral particles the dog is exposed to
3) Whether or not the dog is hygienic/clean

Parvo disease is spread from dog to dog mainly through exposure to contaminated f***s and contaminated objects. Important point to remember here is that the virus remains in dogs hair for 3- wks and can re attack if not maintained well.

WHERE DOES VIRUS COME FROM?
The original canine parvovirus, discovered in 1967 and called "CPV-1". Later, more deadly form of virus called CPV-2 was discovered in 1978 and since then three variants of this form has been identified (CPV-2a, CPV-2b, CPV2c). In India CPV2c is currently most prevalent one. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19552931). The virus is shed in extremely large numbers by infected dogs in stools and vomit, and can persist in organic material in the environment for over one year. The virus is shed in the stool for the first two weeks. A very small amount of virus is enough to infect a non-vaccinated or immune compromised dog. Some dogs are infected but do not appear particularly sick. These animals tend not to be confined since no one knows they are infected thus they can spread virus around a large area depending on wherepass stools.

WHERE DOES PARVO VIRUS COME FROM?

The original canine parvovirus was discovered in 1967. and called "CPV-1". Later CPV-2 was known and it is more deadly. CPV-2 has 3 forms CPV-2a, CPV-2b and CPV-2c. In India CPV-2c is supposed to be more prevalent (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19552931). A very small amount of viral material is enough to infect a non-vaccinated dog. Interestingly, some dogs may be infected but may not appear sick. These animals are not confined since no one knows they are infected thus they can spread virus around a large area depending on where they pass stool.
