The shock collar is at a low setting
I have felt the shock and it’s hardly anything
But there’s nothing to be afraid of, the dog is just being stubborn
The prong corrects the dog like a mother dog would

I was part of a training session where an electronic collar was used for training. I was made to feel the vibration of the collar on my hand before it was put on that dog. It was less than a phones vibration.

In the training session, the dog seemed to be doing better and there was an instant change. But later on, when the dog went home, he retreated into a shell and was never the same. Why am I sharing this story with you all?

Because ONLY THE LEARNER GETS TO DECIDE HOW THE THING BEING TAUGHT FEELS.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month and the role of pain in our animals life is a complex one. It creeps up in subtle ways and doesn’t show till the animal is in significant amount of pain. Chronic or even acute pain can often go unnoticed but wreak havoc in our dogs lives.

Pain can be of different types depending on its location and effected part of the body. So if you notice anything odd in your dogs behaviour, definitely rule it out as a possible cause.

Also, here are some things to look out for in your dog to rule out pain:

• Limping
• Not wanting to get touched/ becoming aggressive or snappy upon being handled
• Reluctance in climbing stairs/ jumping
• Slipping while trying to stand up
• Irritability
• Twitching
• Excessive licking
• Sudden reactivity / aggression
• Sudden change in habits eg, not enjoying the same food they have been eating

My professional suggestion is that any sudden behaviour change should be investigated as a pain issue and showed to the veterinarian.

Orhan Pamuk said that Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen’

Their behaviours serve a purpose which can be hard to understand and accept sometimes, but that doesn’t not make it real. Yes, it can feel frustrating. It can also feel be painful and downright embarrassing at times.

But the question we need to be asking ourselves to help our dogs is - Why is my dog doing this? What need is not being fulfilled because of which this is happening?

What is it mean to set boundaries and provide structure?

It means being consistent with what’s okay and what’s not okay. You don’t need to beat your dog to do that.

However, I do have a problem with the continuous NO’s all the time which are falling on deaf ears. Yet, people don’t stop, nor do they change. Or the ones who never say NO to their dogs and would let them get away with murder!

Behaviour happens for a reason. It is not happening in a vacuum. It has a reason and a reinforcement. Often the focus is only on modifying reinforcement, not the reason. Work with both.

And remember…

BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION IS A BALANCE BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND CHOICE.
