🥚💧 How to Test Egg Freshness with Water – Home Method for Eating & Hatching Eggs 💧🥚
Whether you're cooking or incubating, knowing your egg's freshness is key. Here's a simple water test to check it in seconds!
🔍 Step-by-Step: Place the egg in a glass or bowl of water and observe:
✅ Lies flat on the bottom –
👉 Very fresh. Ideal for eating and BEST for hatching (fertile eggs).
⚠️ Stands upright (bottom down, tip up) –
👉 Still edible, but aging. Not suitable for hatching as hatch rates will drop.
❌ Floats to the top –
👉 Rotten or spoiled. Do NOT eat or incubate.
📌 Why This Works:
As eggs age, the inner moisture evaporates and air fills the gap, making them float. Fertile hatching eggs must retain internal moisture for successful embryo development.
🥚 For Hatching Purposes:
✔️ Use eggs that are less than 7 days old
✔️ Always store pointy end downwards before setting
✔️ Do not wash or scrub before incubation – it can remove the protective bloom
✔️ Ideal incubation window: Day 1 to Day 7 after laying
✔️ Keep collected hatching eggs in a cool room (not fridge) around 15-18°C
🧠 Whether you’re planning a meal or setting up a hatch, this test is a quick, no-cost tool every poultry owner and home cook should know.
