Long ago, in the ancient Greek story The Odyssey, a man named Odysseus left his home to fight in the Trojan War. Before leaving, he had been raising a young dog named Argos. The loyal dog was meant to become his hunting companion, but fate had other plans.
Odysseus was gone for much longer than anyone expected. He spent 10 years fighting in the war and another 10 years trying to return home. Along the way, he faced dangerous monsters, powerful gods, storms, and countless hardships. In total, he was away from his home for 20 years.
While Odysseus was gone, Argos grew old. Without his master, the once-strong hunting dog was neglected. By the time Odysseus finally reached Ithaca, Argos was weak, covered in fleas, and lying on a pile of dung outside the palace.
To protect himself from the enemies who had taken over his home, Odysseus returned disguised as a beggar. No one recognized him. Not the guards. Not the servants. Not even the people who had known him for years.
Only Argos knew the truth.
The old dog was too weak to stand, but he lowered his ears and gently wagged his tail. It was his final way of welcoming the man he had waited for all those years.
Odysseus saw his faithful companion and recognized him immediately. But he could not reveal who he was. Fighting back his emotions, he quietly wiped away a tear and walked on without stopping.
A short time later, Argos passed away.
Written nearly 2,800 years ago, this scene remains one of the most heartbreaking moments in literature. It reminds people that true loyalty does not fade with time, and sometimes love is expressed without saying a single word.
