Cucumbers are harvested vertically as the plants recieve adequate water at the main stem, which keeps the plant drier and assists in maintaining its health. Also the fruit has a more uniform colour, straight shape and reaches optimum growth as it doesn’t touch the soil.

Some interesting facts about Brinjal ( eggplant, aubergine)

• The eggplant is believed to have originated in India, where it is considered to be the King of Vegetables.

• Eggplants aren't REALLY vegetables, they're berries.

• Eggplants and tomatoes are actually related. They both belong to the nightshade family.

• The word "aubergine" goes all the way back to the ancient Indian language Sanskrit.

• In Renaissance Italy, it was called a mala insana or "crazy apple".

The American varieties of the Brinjal ( aubergine or eggplant) are most often dark purple in colour, larger in size, and pear-shaped.

This variety grows up to 12 inches in length, the average width ranges from 2 to 5 inches in diameter, and they can weigh over 500 gms.

Lilium( Lily) is the genus of herbaceous flowering plants which grow from bulbs and have large prominent flowers. The flowers are large, often fragrant, and come in a range of colors including white, yellow, orange, pink, red, and purple. The flowers can also have markings which include spots and brush strokes.

Spacing: It is imperative to ensure proper spacing when planting bulbs to ensure proper yield of produce. The usual spacing is 20x15 cm, 15x15cm or 15x10 cm (plant density varies between 30 and 60/m2 which depends on the bulb size).

Climate: Liliums are the best grown in green houses, and require an ideal day temperature of 18-22 °C and night temperature of 10-15 °C.

We at Blue Tomato use night lights to increase the Daylength (the duration for which a plant is being lit between dark periods) of our seedlings to enhance growth.

A plant’s need for light can be thought of like a bucket being filled with water, where the different light sources are different hoses. A plant which day after day doesn’t get its bucket filled can’t grow properly.

In seedlings, this looks like stretched, thin plants with lots of space between the leaves. The amount of light a plant receives over the course of a day is called its “Daily Light Integral” (DLI). The amount of light in the wavelengths that is useful to plants is called the light Quality.

The Intensity of a light, within the wavelengths that a plant can use, is called “Photosynthetically Active Radiation” (PAR) (also known as “Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density” or PPFD) and it’s what we measure with a horticultural light meter.

Intercropping of Eggplant (brinjal) and Cabbage.

Intercropping is the cultivation of two or more crops simultaneously, on the same field, in close proximity. The most common goal of intercropping is to produce a greater yield on a given piece of land by making use of resources and ecological processes that would otherwise not be utilized by a single crop.

Careful planning is required, taking into account the soil, climate and varieties. It is particularly important not to have crops competing with each other for physical space, nutrient, water and sunlight.

When crops are carefully selected many agronomic benefits are also achieved. Planting two crops in close proximity can especially be beneficial when the two plants interact in a way that increases one or both of the plant's fitness and yield. Intercropping of compatible plants can also encourage biodiversity,  by providing a habitat for a variety of soil organisms that would not be present in a single-crop environment.
