Even in the smallest breeds, these remnants can subtly influence traits such as alertness, sensory awareness, and scent-related behavior.

Hair Growing Inside a Dog’s Eye – Don’t Ignore It!

Have you noticed hair or lashes rubbing inside your dog’s eye? This is not normal and can cause serious discomfort and vision problems if left untreated.

Common Causes Include:

• Distichiasis – extra eyelashes growing from the eyelid margin

• Ectopic Cilia – hair growing from the inner eyelid surface

• Trichiasis – normal hair growing in the wrong direction and rubbing the eye

• Dermoid (Congenital) – a rare condition where skin with hair grows inside or near the eye

Why It’s a Concern These abnormal hairs constantly irritate the cornea and may lead to:

• Excessive tearing
• Redness and squinting
• Corneal ulcers
• Chronic pain
• Vision loss if untreated

Breeds More Commonly Affected Flat-faced and long-haired breeds are at higher risk, including: Pugs, Shih Tzus, Bulldogs, Lhasa Apsos, and other brachycephalic breeds.

Diagnosis & Treatment A veterinary eye examination is essential.

• Mild cases may be monitored
• Severe or painful cases often require surgical correction

Early treatment prevents long-term damage and preserves vision.

Responsible Breeding & Awareness Matters, emphasize health screening, early detection, and educating pet parents.
