Sundarban Wild Animal Park The Sundarban Wild Animal Park (S.W.A.P)is the only mangrove zoo present in West Bengal. The main three species of Sundarban delteic region viz.

The earliest proposal for creation of S.W.A.P at Jharkhali as satellite facility of zoological garden, Alipore was submitted in the year 2009-10 for setting up a tiger rescue center. It is well known to us as SWAP, covering 38.75 ha of land at Lot no.26, Jharkhali, intends to complement the national effort in conservation of wildlife through breeding of endangered species of sundarban & to develo

p empathy among visitors for wild animals. The Saltwater Crocodile, The Spotted Deer, and The majestic Royal Bengal Tiger are being displayed to visitors. The presence of Royal Bengal Tiger of Sundarban glorify the park and attract many visitors from different parts of India & abroad. The lesser cats (Fishing cat, Jungle cat), Turtles, endemic birds of sundarban shall be displayed in large enclosures by following all norms and conditions applied by CZA. And conservation breeding programme for smooth coated otter, Monitor lizard shall be imposed. The park is highly enrich with faunal elements such as fishing cat, jungle cat, wild boar, different types of reptiles such as water monitor lizard, king cobra, monocled cobra, common krait, pit viper etc. Avian diversity is also high with different terrrestial & aquatic birds. Many migratory birds also take shelter in this park in winter season. Insect diversity is also high with different orders of insect, building up of a Butterfly Garden is proposed considering high no. of endemic Lepidopteran diversity. Sundarban Wild Animal Park is well connected with raod as well as revirine system of Sundarban, nearest railway station is Caning. one can easily visit S.A.W.P and spend a good memory into the lap of the nature.

Two day capacity development session on 'SAFE HANDLING OF LIVE EVIDENCE, CARE AND REHABILITATION OF COMMONLY SEIZED/RESCUED WILDLIFE' was organized at Sundarban Wild Animal Park, Jharkhali under 24 Parganas (South) Forest Division on 22.08.2025 and 23.08.2025. Herpetologist and Researcher Sri Anirban Chaudhuri was the speaker and Trainer of the said program.
40 frontline staffs from different ranges under 24 Parganas (South) Forest Division & zoo staffs have participated in these interactive sessions which cover handling, husbundary, breeding & triage of Commonly seized and rescued reptiles (Crocodiles, Freshwater, Marine Turtles & Tortoises, Tokey Geckos, Snakes, Monitor Lizards etc), Lesser Cats, other small Mammals & Birds of Sundarban.

Sundarban Wild Animal Park has profoundly celebrated Wildlife Week (02-08th October), 2024 on 03 October.
In this auspicious occasion an awareness rally on wildlife conservation was organized with Forest staff and zoo staff, students, local community with the guidance of the Range Officer, Matla & Ex-officio Zoo Ranger and other dignitaries.
A sit and draw competition also held on "wildlife and its habitat" where about 51 students have participated.

On 22 nd August, 2024 one day training programme on "Ex-situ management of the Royal Bengal Tiger"was organized by Sundarban Wild Animal Park which was inaugurated by respected Ex-Officio Director Madam SWAP, Jharkhali.
In the first half theoretical sessions on " Enclosure designing and Enrichment planning for Royal Bengal Tiger, stress management, hand rearing, record keeping & comprehensive health management of Royal Bengal Tiger" topics were discussed by Ms.Ish*ta Chongder, Zoo Biologist, WBZA, Mr.Soham Mitra, Research Assistant, SWAP, and Dr.Ashutosh Kumar Biswas, Veterinary Officer, SWAP respectively.
In the second half, a hands-on training programme was organized on "Comprehensive Health Management of Royal Bengal Tiger".
All together 50 staffs from Zoological Garden, Alipore, Bardhaman Zoological Park, Garchumuk Zoological Park, Jungle Mahal Zoological Park, Harinalaya Deer Park & Sundarban Wild Animal Park were wholeheartedly took park in this One day training programme.
