SOME COMMON BREEDING ISSUES - 1
EGGS NOT LAID EVEN AFTER MATING.
1. Immature Female, Give some more time.
2. Old Female, maybe no longer undergoing hormonal changes
3. Malnutrition – Change in diet will work
4. Obesity – Exercise and fat free diet will work
5. Disorder of reproductive system in female can be a cause. It depends on the condition; it can or cannot be rectified. Endoscopy will be of help in determining the condition of the reproductive system.
6. The female maybe infertile.
7. It could be due to hormonal imbalance. Proper treatment will help
8. Bacterial infection can cause infertility. Treating the bird will help.
9. May not be a true pair. But both could be males. But sometimes birds of same s*x behave as true pairs. So DNA s*xing is very important, To confirm the s*x of the bird. DNA will only confirm the s*x of the bird and not the state of their reproductive system.
10. Very high or very low temperature may cause temporary infertility,
11. Lack of Sunlight - Long period of daylight is a must to stimulate breeding.
12. The breeding cycle of the pair many not be out of sync.
13. Location of the cage / Aviary not up to birds liking
14. Nest box location is very important.
It is a very common mistake that most hobbyists make, that is they over look the most important factor that is the positioning of the cage or Aviary, if the female is not happy with the environment. It will not lay. Same is true of the nest boxes, though it is the female that spends most of the time in the nest box. It is the male that selects the nest box for female. If they are not happy with the nest box, shape, size or position they will not nest and hence will not lay. Birds do not like nest boxes that have light entering them, do not keep the nest box opening facing light source.
Another reason for this issue is that the female may be having hormonal issues. If not it could also be due to improper functioning of the female reproductive system, where the Infundibulum (starting point of female reproductive system) fails to catch the ovulated egg thus entering into the abdominal cavity, this is called as "Internal Laying", were the egg gets absorbed in the abdomen and hence goes unnoticed, but sometimes it may lead to complications known as Egg Yolk Peritonitis.
