This natural remedy works wonders and won't break the bank.
Why Salt Is A Pond-Keeper's Best Friend:
• Reduce stress in fish - Salt helps fish maintain their osmotic balance, making it easier for them to regulate fluids and reducing overall stress
• Fights parasites - Many common parasites, like costia and trichodina, cannot tolerate salt
• Improves gill function - Salt helps reduce swelling in gill tissue and promotes healing
• Detoxifies nitrite - In emergency situations, salt can temporarily protect fish from nitrite poisoning
• Boosts mucus production - Helps fish develop a stronger protective slime coat
• Cost-effective - Much cheaper than many specialized medications

When To Use Salt Treatment
Salt treatments are useful for:
1. New fish quarantine to eliminate possible parasites
2. After handling fish during cleanings or transfers
3. When fish show signs of stress (clamped fins, flashing/scratching, lethargy)
4. During parasite outbreaks
5. To support healing after injury or illness
6. As a preventative measure during seasonal changes
7. When nitrite levels are elevated (emergency only)

How To Do A Salt Treatment
What You'll Need:
• Non-iodized salt - Use aquarium salt, kosher salt, or solar salt (avoid table salt with additives)
• Container for mixing - A clean bucket works great
• Scale or measuring cup - For accurate dosing

The Process:
1. Calculate your pond volume - Length × Width × Average Depth (in meters) × 1000 =Amount on liters
2. Determine the salt concentration needed:
o Light treatment (0.3%): 3 Kilo per 1000 liters
o Medium treatment (0.5%): 5 kilos per 1000 liters
o Strong treatment (0.7%): 7 kilos per 1000 liters
3. Pre-dissolve the salt—Never add salt directly to the pond! First, dissolve it completely in a bucket of pond water.
4. Add slowly - Pour the dissolved salt solution around the perimeter of the pond gradually (over 24 hours for larger amounts).
5. Monitor your fish - Watch for signs of stress or improvement.
6. Maintain concentration - Salt doesn't evaporate but is diluted during water changes. Only replace salt proportional to the water you've replaced.

Important Tips:
• Start with a light treatment if you're unsure
• Many plants cannot tolerate salt - consider removing sensitive plants
• Salt will not evaporate - only water changes will remove it
• Always use a test kit to confirm your salt levels
• Salt treatments are not effective against all parasites or bacterial infections
• Prolonged use of high concentrations is not recommended
