Halloween is approaching fast & sadly most of our pets are naturally afraid of sudden loud noises. There is a lot we can do to help our furry friends cope with this time of year.
1. Set up a safe hiding place (use a crate or behind the sofa) - wherever your pet wants to hide. Make it feel safe & secure by covering it with blankets (this will also help dampen firework noises). Have the radio on loud to block out sounds - classical music is best or place a fan, not blowing at your dog but at its level, to create a continuous low level whirling sound.
2. Make this den a fun place to be by hiding treats, stuffed Kongs & toys in there for your dog to find - if the den makes its own treats & toys - "DEN IS GOOD!!"
3. Use an Adaptil plug in, Zylkene, Yucalm or Feliway plug in for your feline friend to help keep them relaxed during this time.
4. Walk your dog earlier in the day now to help create a new routine so you can avoid being out when fireworks are happening.

At the Trust Vet Conference yesterday - some really good talks especially about creating stress free vet visits. Someone reminded me of this video I made a few years ago for the Irish Veterinary Nursing Association Conference hoping to show the cats eye view of a vet visit & ways to help improve it underneath - reducing pre-visit stress will make your cats visits easier for you & your cat!! 😸😸

A video from Zen Pets looking at a vet visit from the cats perspective. There are several stressful events for cats which can be improved: 1. The carrier - m...

Environment Secretary Michael Gove said the collars caused unacceptable "harm and suffering".

Some very cold weather already & over the next few days so please be sure to look after your furfriends & keep them inside. If you're not sure you should bring them in - sit outside for 30 minutes while you think about it!! πŸΆπŸ±β„οΈβ„οΈβ›„β„οΈπŸ˜œ

**PLEASE BE PET AWARE** With Hurricane Ophelia on the way please be mindful of all your pets. Ensure all animals are left inside, that pets have collars with ID tags on or the phone number written inside the collar. Flying debris like bins, fencing, branches & garden furniture can be expected so all pets should be left inside & all potential dangerous debris secured. Some pets will find this event very scary & stressful & should be provided with a safe hiding place indoors with a soft comfy bed. Heavy blankets or towels can be placed over crates or between furniture to help block out scary sounds. Keep windows & doors closed to avoid escape. Be sure to let your pet know you are nearby if required. Stay safe....
