Citizen Canine Ireland My goal is to find positive and effective solutions to common dog behaviour problems and I believe training should be rewarding for BOTH you and your dog.

I teach you how to train your canine companion and in doing so, help build a stronger bond between you and your dog. For in person training I cover areas Wicklow, Dublin, Carlow, Wexford and Kilkenny .

Today at puppy play and train we had a hopping good time. 🐰🐣
Starting with an Easter egg hunt with treats for both dogs and their humans, 🐾we moved onto.the more serious business of watching wrestling puppies, running puppies, jumping puppies, puppies getting kissed, puppies being silly and being themselves. 🐢
A great day and more next week. Hooray for Puppies😍

Proof that teenage dogs CAN listen! πŸ‘€πŸŽ‰

I love to see dogs being dogs and enjoying off lead fun with their friends. But the real magic happens when playtime pauses. ✨

Recall around other dogs is one of the toughest skills to master. I structure my play and train groups to facilitate training opportunities during our sessions ( recall out of play being number 1) i find that incorporating the use of a whistle ( in video) makes a real impact too when it comes to a speedy recall.πŸ‘

Want to join our next off-lead session for teenage dogs? Send me a DM! πŸ“©

Sunshine, tail wags, and Wicklow's sweetest puppies! β˜€οΈπŸΎ

Yesterday’s Puppy Play & Train group was pure magic. We took full advantage of the beautiful sunny weather in our huge puppy playground, and these little ones did not disappoint! Watching them build confidence, learn new skills, and tumble around with their new best friends is exactly why I love being a dog trainer. πŸ’›πŸΆ
Who's up for next week?

Elsa and Heidi. This is some of what I worked on during their 15 day residential holiday with me.
Very loving and relaxed sisters and oh so bright.

Retriever Sisters Heidi and Elsa came to stay for a 15 day residential training holiday. Top goal, walking on a loose lead ( we did lots of other fun training challenges too)They had previously worn headcollars to aid with dive bombing into bushes and weaving in front of owner but they were proving ineffective. I worked extensively on loose lead exercises and better acclimation to wearing the headcollars as requested.

Bertie, the devilishly handsome retriever came for his 10 day training holiday a few weeks back.
Training goals were general basic obedience, waling nicely on lead, not jumping up when greeting and recall. He has a kindness and sunny attitude that make Bertie an exceptional family pet. πŸ₯°

We hit the streets for a 2nd week yesterday for out Urban Street Manners Group walk.πŸΎπŸ•
Training in the living room is great but having a dog filter out the noise to tune in and engage with their people as the world buzzes by builds confidence for both ends of the lead.
We worked primarily on proofing basic obedience skills, building better impulse control and social neutrality when other dogs passed- by with our ' leave it ' cue and Sit/ Stay exercise. Lovely teamwork yesterday from everyone and the dogs worked their brains as much as their legs. 🐾πŸ’ͺπŸΌπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘

Here's a short video of me and Bertie Golden. He is such an incredible personality and has the sweetest temperament .This is Day 2 of training.
The video features a step by step breakdown of a Lure- Reward progression that I typically use. End goal of this progression is to have Bertie lie down when he hears the word ' Down ' without giving a hand signal.
During Each step of the progression, I'm rewarding Bertie every time he gets it right, I use the marker word ' yes' during the video . With each step , I'm doing multiple repetitions at that level and rewarding before moving onto the next progression.
I thought this video wouid be useful to people to highlight how quickly you can progress on from food luring ( acquisition phase) to fading the salience of the food lure( empty hand) to avoid your dog only responding when you are showing the money upfront! This is why you see me in the video ' paying' from my left hand.

During the next step on this video I'm looking to build a predictive association by using the sequence 'down' ( new cue) > pause> empty hand signal ( old cue) so that Bertie will anticipate the signal that has come before and will lie down before I gesture with my hand.
Lastly, I change the angle/ distance to help with 'proofing' the behaviour to help Bertie understand that ' down' cue applies
regardless of where I'm.standing.
Thanks for watching, he is a star.
