WHY BUY A BALLYERK CONNEMARA PONY?

An unbroken pony offers a blank slate -
a unique opportunity to shape your pony’s education from the very beginning.
With no baggage from previous handling or rushed training, you can
build a solid foundation of trust, respect, and responsiveness.

Why Choose a Connemara?
The Connemara pony is celebrated for its exceptional temperament
, stamina, and versatility.
It is widely regarded as one of the finest mounts for children,
teenagers, and small adults, equally at home in leisure riding
or competitive sport.

Budget-Friendly Start
An unbroken Connemara typically costs €2,000–€3,000
, compared to €6,000+ for a broken pony.
You save money

and gain the opportunity to guide the pony’s development
yourself, or with professional support.

Familiarity Builds Confidence
Keeping a pony at home gives children
the chance to bond naturally with their animal. They’ll learn the pony’s character, quirks, and needs.
During this time, they can take lessons at a riding school, gaining skill and confidence.

A True Blank Canvas
Many ponies are broken in too young and too quickly

often leading to unseen bad habits that only surface later, and can be difficult (and expensive) to correct.
With an unbroken pony, you set the pace. You control the process.
You build the pony’s training on trust, calmness, and consistency

the foundation of a safe and reliable riding pony.
Safety must always come first.

An Enjoyable Family Project
Buying an unbroken pony should be seen as an enjoyable family journey.

At two years old, the pony can begin to lead quietly on a halter.

At three, you might introduce a saddle and allow a small, light rider to sit
and walk the pony for short periods.

By four, you can begin walk, trot, and canter work several times a week.
It’s a gentle, progressive process, one that encourages growth in both pony and rider.

Strong Return on Investment
Should your child later choose to step away from riding, your pony

now well-handled, well-started, and well-mannered -
will be worth many times your original investment.

Why a Ballyerk Pony?
At Ballyerk Ponies, we offer something truly unique:
distinctive Connemara bloodlines, no longer found anywhere else in the world

tracing directly back to the legendary international showjumper Dundrum,
through the Carna Dun line.
Many of our top performers were sold unbroken and went on to great success, including:

Ballyerk Dun and Dusted: CPBS Highest Performance Connemara Pony 2021

Ballyerk Black Beauty: International Eventing Champion

Ballyerk Comet: Ranked 6th in US Pony of the Year 2022

Our ponies are now thriving in, among others, Sweden, France, the United States, and Taiwan.

Really privileged to carry on this legacy at Ballyerk Connemara Ponies—our mare Oldtown Dawn (by Grey Dawn, son of Tully Grey) is dam to our palomino stallion Ballyerk Cream, now producing standout jumpers like Ballyerk Suir Lad. Watch Cream on YouTube & find Suir Lad at Ballyerk Connemara Ponies!

“Tully Grey” and Evelyn Harold,
pictured here at the RDS Dublin in 1963.

The Stallion “Tully Grey” competed for many years with 3 daughters of the Harold Family From Co Longford, having been sold by Tom McDonogh, Roundstone, Co Galway, starting off as a 3 year old back in the 1950s, his riders together taking home over 800 Showjumping Rosettes collectively.

He was the First Pony Stallion allowed to compete at the RDS and he won at every show he was entered in, sometimes competing against horses.

He was accustomed to leading the Winners Lap of Honour, and at one stage when Evelyn allowed the 2nd place rider, a boy, to lead the lap of honour he showed his dissatisfaction at such by taking off with her and jumping out over the pocket gate,
yet he was treated as a family member by the Harold Family and was remembered as a gentle pony.

He sired one Stallion son; Dale Haze, who was the sire of Hazy Dawn.

The story with no hat in this picture was that apparently it fell off going around the course.
