Many of the dogs we see at our shelter would make lovely family pets. It is our policy to endeavour to find new homes for as many of these dogs as possible. Some of the dogs we are currently caring for are pictured below. However please remember that taking on a dog is a big responsibility so please keep this in mind when thinking about re-homing a dog.

Our Re-homing policy.
Currently the shelter has an arrangement with Dogs Trust for re-homing dogs. Where a dog is surrendered or an owner doesn’t come forward it stays at the shelter until we get a call from Dogs Trust. They are then transferred to Dogs Trust every few weeks and they re-home them. In 2018 183 dogs came into the centre. Of these 21 were claimed back by their owners, 103 were transferred to dog welfare groups mainly Dogs Trust, 39 were homed from the shelter and only 3 were put to sleep and this is one of the best records in the country (The balance were still in the shelter at the end of the year). So far this year nearly 100 dogs have passed through and none have been put down. From time to time we will put dogs on Facebook but if you don’t see any it doesn’t mean that we aren’t busy with re-homing it’s just that we are working with Dogs Trust or other welfare groups.

As the lambing season is underway Sligo County Council reminds all dog owners of the need to ensure that their dogs are under control at all times.

Dogs can cause devastating damage when they attack sheep at any time of the year but the damage is even more pronounced at this time as Ewes are in lamb. Statistics collated by IFA indicate that the problem of dog attacks on sheep may be in the order of 300 to 400 attacks per annum, with 3,000 to 4,000 sheep injured and an average of 11 sheep killed or injured per attack. Last spring 40 sheep were killed in one attack on a County Roscommon farm.

Where a dog owner is identified they are responsible for the losses suffered if their dog attacks sheep. The Council will investigate any reported attack and follow through on any findings. However the best way to avoid attacks is for dog owners ensure their dog is under control at all times.
