Bluetongue has recently been confirmed in a few farms in Co. Wexford, highlighting that the disease is now a real risk to Irish dairy herds.
Now is the time to start thinking about vaccination and protecting your stock.
While clinical signs in cows are often mild, Bluetongue can have a major impact on performance, including:
• Milk yield losses for up to 9 weeks
• Reduced fertility and increased barren rates
• Abortion and early embryonic loss
• Calves born with congenital defects
A two-shot vaccine, Bultavo 3, is available. It is given as:
• 1 ml intramuscular injection
• Two doses, 3 weeks apart
• Peak immunity reached 3 weeks after the second dose
Whole-herd vaccination is recommended (from 1 month of age), but at a minimum all breeding females should be vaccinated and protected.
