This evening, our hearts are heavy.

We would like to pay tribute to two cherished members of our family whom we lost this week. Lexi (17) our loyal little Jack Russell, and Pip (13), our gentle Springer. For years, these two extraordinary souls walked through the doors of the shelter every day alongside their humans, bringing with them a sense of comfort, joy, and calm that only animals can give.

Lexi and Pip were more than just beloved companions; they were part of our team. They helped foster countless kittens, cats, puppies and dogs, offering warmth, patience, and reassurance to the most vulnerable little lives. Their presence made the shelter feel more like a home, not only for the animals but for all of us who had the privilege of working beside them.

We all know how incredibly painful it is to say goodbye to a beloved family pet, and as we face a new week without their familiar paws padding through the halls, the silence feels deeper.

Our thoughts are especially with their humans, Colleen and Lorna, who adored them beyond measure and shared them with us so generously.

To everyone reading this,  hug your pets a little tighter this evening 🧡

Lexi and Pip, thank you for your years of love, service, and companionship. You will always be part of our family, and you will be deeply missed 🧡 🌈

Little Tiger 🧡

This handsome boy arrived at the NSPCA through our inspectors. When he first arrived, he was a little unsure and nervous, but with patience and gentle encouragement, his sweet, playful personality quickly began to shine through.

Tiger is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross. He adores his walks, exploring new places, and meeting new people. He is full of energy, curiosity, and always eager to please, Tiger is so smart and food motivated who loves learning new tricks (especially if yummy treats are involved!).

Once he’s had his daily dose of fun and exercise, Tiger is more than happy to curl up beside you for cuddles, convinced he’s a lap dog at heart.

We’re looking for a family with experience in his breed, one who will continue his training and help him grow into the best boy. He could potentially live with another dog pending a dog meet.

Because of his bouncy, playful nature, Tiger would be best suited to a home with teenagers or adults who can match his energy and enthusiasm.

Could you be the one to welcome Tiger into your family and give him the forever home he deserves? 🐾

Come visit him at our Dublin shelter. We’re open Tuesday to Sunday from 12-4pm. No appointment needed.

I don’t think I can spend a third Christmas in a shelter… 💔

I’m Ellie, a gentle, affectionate Lurcher who’s trying so hard to stay hopeful.

I adore people. My favourite part of every day is going for walks, well that and cuddle time. What Lurcher doesn’t love snuggling up beside you, relaxing, and hearing how wonderful they are?

My rescue journey began back in 2023 at NSPCA Longford, where I waited and waited for my perfect match. When no one came, I moved to NSPCA Wicklow, hoping for a fresh start. And for a little while, I found it and spent five happy months with a loving family.

But sometimes love isn’t enough. The children in the home were sweet, but I struggled sharing my cosy couch spot with them. It wasn’t their fault, I just wasn’t used to it 😞

Now I know what kind of home I truly need. An adult only home where they will understand me and as the saying goes - let sleeping dogs lie. I still like saying hi to children out on my walks. While I can be selective with my doggie friends, I do enjoy the company of some dogs I know well, but a calm, pet free home is best for me 🐾

I’m playful, I’m fun, and when I’m out exploring, I enjoy every second. But the waiting… it’s hard. Some days I feel like giving up. I’m trying to be brave and stay positive, but the thought of spending a third Christmas in a shelter is breaking my big Lurcher heart 🥺

Will you please help make my Christmas wish of finding a forever home come through?

I know I’m not perfect, but I can be someone’s perfect pet.

With love and hope,

Ellie ❤️

Court Case: Lifetime Ban and 4 Month Suspended Sentence for Neglect and Causing Suffering to Six Dogs.

NSPCA Inspectors alerted Fingal County Council following a complaint received regarding an alleged puppy farm at a premises in Swords, Co. Dublin.

On 8 November 2023, NSPCA Inspectors assisted An Garda Síochána and a Fingal County Council Dog Warden, who had obtained a warrant from the Dublin Metropolitan District Court in connection with the reported animal welfare concerns.

Upon entering the property, Inspectors were met with extremely poor living conditions. Multiple dogs were confined in unsuitable crates without access to water. The premises were heavily soiled with urine, faeces, and household waste throughout.

At the rear of the property, additional dogs, including puppies, were discovered without adequate shelter or clean water. A dog run was found to be heavily contaminated with faeces and urine, and bowls contained waste instead of water. Two of the dogs were observed to be severely underweight.

In total, six dogs were seized and removed under the Animal Health and Welfare Act. Two underweight Airdale Terrier type dogs were transported to the NSPCA Dublin Centre, where the veterinary team was on standby to examine them. A full report of the investigation, including photographic evidence taken at the premises and by the NSPCA veterinary team along with full veterinary reports, were submitted to Fingal County Council to be used as evidence for the case.

Fingal County Council subsequently prosecuted the defendant on 12 charges under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.

In court on Tuesday, 4 October 2025, the defendant, a father of one, pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to six counts of neglect and six counts of causing unnecessary suffering to the dogs.

The court heard that the defendant had prior convictions under the Animal Health and Welfare Act from November 2022, for which he had received a custodial sentence. He pleaded for leniency, presenting photographs of the property and claiming that a drainage problem at the rented premises explained the strong odour of faeces and urine.

In mitigation, it was stated that the defendant had cared for and adopted dogs from an early age and had previously kept animals to a high standard, winning medals and awards. His barrister appealed to the court not to impose a custodial sentence, noting that the defendant cares for his elderly father and has not kept any dogs since the incident.

Solicitor Mr. Quinlan informed the court that the defendant had previously been given a 10-year ban on owning animals for his previous conviction. The judge agreed to extend this to a lifetime ban, with the possibility of review at a later date should the defendant apply to keep animals in the future.

We are pleased to say that both dogs who were seized by NSPCA inspectors have since been rehomed to loving families, where they are reported to be doing very well. We hope the four dogs seized by Fingal County Council are also living the happy lives they all deserve.

We would like to thank Fingal County Council and An Garda Síochána for all their efforts in this joint animal cruelty investigation.

We’re absolutely delighted to share that our incredible Foster Volunteers have been shortlisted for the 2025 Awards.

The awards will take place on December 6th, and we couldn’t be prouder of all our volunteers, past and present, who have so generously opened their homes and hearts to animals in need.

Our foster volunteers and their families are an essential part of the NSPCA community. Without their dedication, love, and compassion, we couldn’t provide the care so many animals rely on, especially the young, sick, injured, or vulnerable.

Every kitten and puppy that comes into our care needs to go out to foster homes until they are vaccinated, old enough and ready for adoption. We also need foster homes for cats and dogs that may need extra care after surgery, pregnant mothers who need a quiet home to have and nurse their new borns, those who require special medical needs for a period of time and those who need a little extra TLC or socialisation before they are ready for adoption.

We are endlessly grateful for every current and past foster volunteer who has helped give so many animals a second chance. We would truly be lost without you.

Fostering is a wonderful way to make a difference if you’re not ready to adopt long-term but still want to help animals in need.

Bug - What he loves most of all, are cuddles and simply being close to you.🧡

This is another appeal for beautiful Bug as he’s still waiting for a home and we’re losing hope.

At 11 years young, Bug the Terrier has a big heart and a gentle soul. He enjoys his walks, loves his food, and never says no to treats. What he loves most of all, though, are cuddles and simply being close to his favourite people.

Bug would be happiest in a quieter, laid-back home with someone who is around most of the time. He’d make the perfect companion for someone who works from home or for anyone looking for a loyal little pal to share their days with. He may also be able to live with a calm, gentle dog pending a successful dog meet.

Bug has a low grade heart murmur which can be common in older dogs. He is not currently on any medication, but he may need some in the future. This doesn’t stop him enjoying life.

Bug may be small, but he has so much love to give - all he needs now is someone to share it with.

Come visit him at our Dublin shelter. We’re open Tuesday to Sunday from 12-4pm. No appointment needed.

Our last hope to keep them together 💔💔

An inseparable mother and son duo who we’ve done many appeals for are finding kennel life so stressful and depressing that it’s starting to affect their special bond. They are becoming easily frustrated with one another and we may need to make the heartbreaking decision to separate them in the shelter. This is absolutely breaking our hearts.😔

We are begging for your help to find them a home together urgently!🥺

Please read below how wonderful they are and if you are the person they’ve been waiting for, please them come and visit us or email [email protected]

Duchess & Chunk

At 11 and 9 years old, Duchess and her son Chunk never imagined they’d find themselves in a shelter together but sadly, it’s now their reality.

They arrived into our care from another rescue after they were surrendered by their owner hoping to find a new home where they can stay side by side.

They’re medium, adorable bundles of affection who absolutely adore human company. Duchess and Chunk have been together their whole lives, and they play an important role in each other’s happiness and comfort. They both have limited vision, so they rely on each other for stability and reassurance.

Although they are a slightly older pair they are both still full of life and energy and love getting out for their walks. Their favourite part of the day is when they hear you coming... they will smother you with kisses.

Duchess & Chunk are an absolute joy to be around and we’re looking for a very special someone to take this sweet duo home together. They are robust and bouncy so a home with teenagers would be best as they will certainly knock over little humans with excitement.

Don’t forget you can also help by sharing this post.

A Heartwarming Update 🧡

It’s been six months since this sweet boy was adopted by a wonderful family. When Francis was first found as a stray, his coat was in terrible condition and most of it had to be shaved off. He waited patiently for it to grow back and now he’s looking so incredibly handsome and is thriving in his new home 🐱

It really is amazing what love, stability, and a caring home can do for a once neglected animal.

Thank you to everyone who chooses to adopt, you’re not only changing the life of one animal, but making space so that we can rescue more 🧡

Fluffy, our spicy little bun 🐾

This beautiful girl came to the NSPCA after her previous owners sadly could no longer care for her.

She wasn’t too happy about shelter life and has found it a quite stressful, so we’d love to help her find a calm, loving home where she can truly relax and soak up all the attention.

At 2 and a half years old, this adorable little bun loves her comforts and will fully flake out after having her morning nuggets. She absolutely adores her greens (as you can probably tell!).

This spicy girl is looking for a home with experienced rabbit owners who will not overcrowd with too much affection and let her come to you them when she’s good and ready. We know she’ll thrive in a quiet home where she can spend her days sunbathing on a windowsill, exploring, and being left to suss out the world and people at her own pace.

Could you be the one to give this sweet girl the forever home she’s been waiting for?

Come visit her at our Dublin shelter. We’re open Tuesday to Sunday from 12-4pm. No appointment needed.

History of the DSPCA

The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was established in 1840 and is the oldest and largest animal charity in the Republic of Ireland.

In its early days the Society was known as the Dublin Auxiliary of the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals and it was founded the year the RSPCA received Royal Patronage, over the years it has had many names including “The Dublin Home for Starving and Forsaken Cats”.

The Society was based at Grand Canal Quay in Dublin City from its formation in 1840 up until 1990, and generations of Dublin people were familiar with it as “The Dogs and Cats Home” and at times as “The Cats & Dogs Home”.

In 1990 the Society moved to the Potterton Restfields at Stocking Lane in Rathfarnham, a suburb of Dublin. The land was bequeathed to the Society in the 1930s as a place to graze retired working horses.
