Last week, the very adorable Syd paid us a not-so-glamorous visit… with a blocked bladder 😳🐾
A urinary blockage means a cat physically can’t pass urine — it’s painful and, more importantly, a true emergency 🚨 Luckily, Syd’s humans spotted the signs early and got him to us in time (gold star pet parenting ⭐).
Without prompt treatment, toxins can build up quickly in the body and this can become life-threatening.
Many cases like Syd’s are linked to Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), which can be influenced by:
• Stress or changes at home
• Indoor lifestyles (aka professional couch potatoes)
• Carrying a little extra weight (Syd is now on his fitness journey 😂)
• Not drinking enough water — especially on dry-only diets
• Being male (their urethra is narrower)
The good news? There’s lots you can do to help reduce the risk:
💧 Add more moisture — think wet food & multiple water stations
🏃 Encourage playtime and keep them at a healthy weight
🧘 Keep life predictable and low-stress (as much as cats allow!)
🧼 Clean litter trays daily (rule of thumb: one per cat + one extra)
If your cat is straining, in and out of the litter tray, or vocalising in pain — don’t wait. Get them checked immediately.
Syd is now on the mend and back to doing what he does best… being adorable ❤️
Early action really does save lives.
