Still strong and powerful Little Joe was 30yo when this photo was taken in Nov. '93 with owner Seàn Stagg of Hollymount, Co. Mayo. He was by Carna Dun out of Jim Dudley Walshe's lovely Cregg Lassie.
Seàn was on his honeymoon in '63 when he bought him as a foal and he won the 2yo c**t class with him in '65. Three times he came third in the Open Stallion class in '66, '68, and '79.
He became a hugely successful Grade A showjumper and racing pony at the flappers. Five times he won the 'Derby' at the Clifden races.(This annual meet finished in 1973). He also covered hundreds of mares, mostly in south Mayo where he held iconic status.
He died with the Stagg family two years after this photo was taken. A really special pony who had an amazingly full life.

The thoroughbred Winter (see previous post) covered just a handful of mares in 1942 and '43 before his untimely death. He was a gift to the CPBS from Mr. Usher from Swords in Dublin.
He and Little Heaven, another thoroughbred who spent a short time in the early 50s on the Stallion List could not have come along at a more oppurtune time. Like farmers all over the world those in Connemara were looking towards mechanisation and would not be limited in future to the speed and power of the pony.
Winter, Little Heaven and their progeny added scope, height and athleticism and were key to repurposing the Connemara for the sport and leisure market. They had a truly positive and transformative effect on the breed.
