Often the first faces we see when finding ourselves on a visit to Limerick Night Vets emergency out of hours service.
A friendly face and a calm word when dealing with veterinary emergencies, our emergency team of registered Veterinary nurses are without a doubt some of the bravest people we know.

Highly skilled and eager to help, emergency work is not for the faint hearted.

Thank you for being there on weekends and through the night to provide care to those who need to you during the most worrying time.

Over the weekend we have not one but three GDV emergencies surgeries, so we thought we would share some information on what this is and how to hopefully prevent itโ€ฆ

GDV stands for Gastric Dilation Volvulus meaning the stomach bloats and twists causing gas to be trapped inside the stomach. It is an emergency life threatening condition that needs immediate veterinary care. The treatment unfortunately is surgery. Most commonly seen in large to giant breed dogs. In particular those who have had a large meal and then taken for a walk afterwards. To prevent this, we recommend feeding AFTER walking instead.

This little Hedgehog was found out in the sun, feeling very lethargic over the weekend and a member of public brought him in to us in Limerick Night Vets.
We warmed fluids to help him feel better, and he perked up right after, he began to eat and he even showed us his little face and big feet ๐Ÿ˜‚
