Itโ€™s so important for us as groomers to ask WHY. Rather than labelling dogs as difficult , dramatic , bold or any of the many other things we commonly call dogs who struggle with grooming . Stop and Ask WHY

There are always reasons for these behaviours
Behaviour is combination
They are scared , uncomfortable and/or in pain. When we stop to ask why we recognise these issues. And can address them. We can guide owners on veterinary and behaviour intervention. That means a lot less stress for you and the dog and another dogs welfare tended to properly -isnโ€™t that why we became groomers ?

We have bred dogs over thousands of years to do jobs for us and want to please us. And fighting is not in their best interest when it comes to survival . They donโ€™t chose these responses easily - sometimes they donโ€™t choose them at all fight or flight just takes over.

A prime example is Archie here in the pic - he struggled desperately with handling and grooming to the point he needed to use aggressive responses . Turns out He has hip dysplasia. Hes a young dog so joint problems etc are not just an issue in senior dogs.

Rogue, a cockapoo from a busy family home, was described as a cheerful and affectionate dog, well-socialised and easy going. However, over the course of a few months, subtle changes in her behaviour began to emerge.

Initially, Rogue appeared reluctant to put on her harness and started stopping on walks. She showed mild signs of withdrawal, including choosing to rest away from family members and becoming less playful. Her owners described her as becoming โ€œmoodyโ€ or โ€œstubborn,โ€ though she was otherwise eating, sleeping, and interacting normally.

The concerning shift came when Rogue growled and later snapped at one of the children who leaned over to cuddle her while she was resting. This was a dramatic departure from her usual demeanour, prompting the family to seek support so she was referred to me by their vet.

During the behavioural consultation, Rogue was observed to be tense during physical contact, particularly around her hindquarters. Although she remained generally compliant and eager to engage still racing to chase a ball.

After a couple of weeks, when behaviour modification had failed it was decided that she needed to return to the vets. Following clinical examination and imaging, Rogue was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Her tolerance had masked the condition until the behavioural signs became too pronounced to ignore.

In many cases, particularly with pain conditions like early joint disease, spinal discomfort, or undiagnosed injury, dogs may not exhibit overt lameness or vocalise pain. Instead, signs may include:

- Reluctance to move or be handled
- Subtle aggression or growling during touch
- Avoidance behaviours
- Decreased sociability
- Changes in gait or posture

These behaviours are often misinterpreted as defiance, regression, or temperament change when in fact, they are clinical red flags.

Rogue was started on a tailored pain management plan and environmental modifications were made to reduce physical strain. With treatment in place, her behaviour returned to baseline: affectionate, engaged, and relaxed.

Behaviour is often the first visible symptom of pain.
