More words, more repetition, louder noises - none of it works if your dog doesn’t have the reference points yet. Every sound you make means absolutely nothing until you build a shared language together. And that language isn’t built on vocabulary. It’s built on predictability. 🤙🏼😯

Forget strict. Think predictable.

The hot iron analogy - think of the end of the leash like a hot iron. Roam freely, reach the end and move away? Brilliant — that gets rewarded. ✅
Lean into it and stay there? 🔥 sizzle sizzle - Correction incoming.

Consistency. Once you commit to correcting the pulling it has to be every single time. Every environment. No exceptions whatsoever. The moment you let it go - even once - your dog learns that pulling sometimes works.

And sometimes is all they need to keep doing it forever. 🙃

Never correcting your dog isn’t kindness. It’s confusion. 😵‍💫🦮

Part 4 of an initial 3 part series. We kept going. 😅

Dogs are consequence based learners — just like us. And an effectively delivered leash correction is one of the most powerful communication tools you have. But most people are doing it completely wrong!

A leash pop is not a pull. It’s not a yank. It’s not dragging your dog around like you’re losing a battle with a very determined kite. 🪁

It’s pressure on and off before your dog even knows it happened. Sharp, clean and done. It’s to interrupt and punish the behaviour not create higher levels of frustration 😤

Practice on a door handle first. Start at a low intensity and build from there — every pooch have differing sensitivity levels and you need to find your dog’s.

How do you know if it worked? Watch the behaviour. Does your dog repeat it? That’s your answer. 🐾

How to use a slip leash properly part 2 - teaching leash pressure 😌🙏🏼

Too often I hear clients say they purchased a slip lead and it doesn’t work… i.e they don’t know how use it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Of course it’s not going to work if you’ve been using it hideously incorrectly for the past umpteen number of days, months, years…

if your haven’t taught your fluffy pal to turn off leash pressure I can guarantee you are on a one way bus to downtown stranglesville! 😵‍💫🚌

Your dog has this wee thing called opposition reflex. Pull them one way, they want to go the other. So you are already fighting a losing battle against nature. SO you have to teach them that moving towards the pressure is what turns it off. 🤔💡

Dog anchors mid walk — hold the tension. Wait for a single step towards you. Bam - release the tension that moment. That’s it. 🙂‍↕️

Don’t release early - or they learn pulling works.
Don’t drag them along - or they aren’t learing to turn off the pressure.

Pressure on, one step, then release… be consistent 🫶🏼

Slip leash sitting loose and low on your dog’s neck? 👀🐕

I can guarantee that’s doing more harm than good. 🤷🏻‍♂️🥴

Placement is everything.
High and snug — right behind the ears, underneath the chin. That’s where it needs to live for it to work effectively and safely - can’t have it sliding down 👷🏼‍♂️

P shape over the head for the left side. q or 9 shape (whatever floats your goat 🐐) for the right. Leash running across the top of the neck towards you.

Get that right first. Part 2 upcoming shows you how to wield it. 👆

We lost Albus yesterday.

But thank the lord jebus we were able to find him.

Losing dogs is such commonplace. Sure. Sometimes you can become a little bit arrogant and cocky, thinking that your dogs recall is the bee’s knee’s.

But I urge everyone who owns a dog that is thinking of letting them have off leash freedom, to get a tracker. ASAP!

The peace of mind to be able to find your pooch when you have no eyes on them, is the difference between calmly collecting your tangled pooch and having a stress induced aneurysm.

That’s all! Albus is home and all safe ❤️

The collar on your dog isn’t just an fancy pantsy accessory (although they can be). It’s a training tool. And the wrong one could be working against you. 🥲🐕‍🦺

Flat collars. Martingales. Slips + Prongs. They all have purpose’s as well as sounding like the authors of the marauder’s map (HP reference, sorry not sorry 🧙🏼‍♂️) - but none of them work if your dog doesn’t understand leash pressure. 😵‍💫👨🏻‍🏫

Bungee leads = delayed communication. Muddied signals. A dog pinging off the end of the leash like a pinball 🎳

Unless you’re competing in cross-country tandem dog sports — and let’s be honest, you’re not — you really don’t need one 🤷🏻‍♂️

what you do need: 6ft leash. Little to no give. Cleanest communication. Simple. 😌👍🏼
