Equine influenza vaccination is effective in reducing clinical signs and virus shedding. The influenza virus circulating at present is related to the recommended vaccine strains. A booster vaccination is recommended for horses that have not been vaccinated during the last six months. Horses attending competitions and shows are most at risk, but all horses on a premises should be vaccinated irrespective of their activity.

As temperatures rise, so too does the risk of environmental pathogens in yards and paddocks.

Simple steps — such as maintaining clean water sources, managing manure effectively, and monitoring high-traffic areas — can make a significant difference to overall herd health.

A proactive approach now can help prevent avoidable issues later in the season.

As the covering season begins to wind down, focus naturally shifts to early pregnancy checks and ongoing mare health in partnership with your vet. This is also a critical time for biosecurity. The measures you put in place now will underpin the health and success of both foals already on the ground and those in utero for 2027. At the Irish Equine Centre, we work closely with breeders and veterinary practitioners to support robust, evidence-based biosecurity on your yard — helping you make informed decisions through targeted scientific testing.

A strong season starts with strong foundations.
