Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month Spotlight 🌟

Today we’re celebrating the brilliant Aoife McGowan, our newest Consumables & Orthopaedics Sales Support Representative and an exceptional veterinary nurse whose journey has taken her across clinics, continents, and career paths.

Aoife graduated from Atlantic Technological University, Letterkenny in 2017 with a BSc in Veterinary Nursing, working straight out of college into a mixed practice. While she quickly discovered her passion lay firmly in small animal care, as the on call hours were not her cup of tea especially the 3am calls for heifer C-sections!

After two years, Aoife moved into a small animal clinic where her dedication and leadership saw her progress from veterinary nurse to Head Nurse, and eventually into a Practice Management role. All the while, she was studying part-time in UCD, earning both a Diploma in Business and a Professional Diploma in Human Resource Management - talk about drive!

Four years later, adventure called. Aoife headed to Australia, spending two years working as a Senior Veterinary Nurse in several clinics and hospitals. There, she had the opportunity to work closely with orthopaedic vets, an area she grew to love and one that now shapes her role with us at Duggan Veterinary.

We’re delighted to have Aoife on our team 💙

Did you know osteoarthritis affects 1 in 5 dogs - and many cases go unnoticed? 🐕

Subtle changes like stiffness after rest, slowing down on walks, or hesitation to jump can be early signs of joint discomfort.

Early support can make a real difference. That’s why many dog owners turn to 4Cyte™ Canine, formulated to help support joint function and cartilage health.

CCN in Calves & Lambs - A Seasonal Neurological Challenge! 🧠

As turnout continues, Cerebrocortical Necrosis (CCN) remains an important differential for neurological disease in young grazing stock.

CCN is a non-infectious brain disorder linked to thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency, most commonly seen in calves and lambs at grass.

Typical clinical presentation includes:
• Dullness and isolation from the group
• Blindness / “star-gazing” posture
• Head pressing and abnormal gait
• Progression to seizures or recumbency if untreated

Early recognition and rapid treatment are critical, as brain damage can become irreversible if intervention is delayed. Treatment protocols typically involve prompt thiamine administration (IV/IM) and supportive care, alongside addressing underlying dietary triggers. 💉

Be sure your practice is prepared for the summer CCN rise and contact our sales team today to stock up on our Thiamine treatment solution!
