🌟🌟🌟Exciting news! 🌟 🌟🌟

As some of you may have seen, Liam is now also working with KMC vets in Loughrea! He is delighted to be able to work alongside a great team to bring a better service to both Craughwell and Loughrea!
Liam will still be running Craughwell Vets as usual with the added benefits of what KMC have to offer!
This means as things get busier there will always be a vet available!

Also it means we can offer enhanced services such as
- Bull and Ram Fertility
- Weighing for the BEEP scheme
- the availability of a Hoof Crate for lame animals

We are still on a mission to get Craughwell Vets a business premises as soon as possible - but as with all great things- it takes time!

Rehydration, treatment plan & heat for this little lad!! 🩺 Thankfully a night in the neonatal unit served him well and is back with mother 🙏
Scour can be caused by
👉Parasites (Cryptosporidia, *Coccidia **normally calves over 3 wks**)
👉Viruses (Rotavirus, Coronavirus)
👉Bacteria (Salmonella, *E-coli **calves under 5 days**)
Key points with scouring calves 👇
▪️Early intervention is key!- call the vet if 📲

✔calf is refusing milk
✔down & lethargic
✔eyes appear sunken due to dehydration
✔temperature outside the normal range (38.5-39.5°C) 🌡

⚠️**Isolate the calf away from other calves on farm***

We can carry out a quick snap test that can identify which scour the calf may have.
A treatment appropriate to diagnosis with IVFT therapy is provided.
It is important to note that these are baby animals! they need thermal support such as heat lamps and dry straw bedding.

Important- practicing proper biosecurity is critical when dealing with sick calves as in some scour cases they can cause disease in humans.

***Nematodirus Warning for Lambs🐑***

We are issuing a Nematodirus warning for lambs as weather conditions have been ideal for the parasite. Numerous outbreaks have been diagnosed in the practice over the past couple of weeks.
👉Lambs typically have scour and a "humpy" appearance. The disease is often confused with coccidiosis (which requires different treatment). A simple dung sample will tell the difference in 36 hours.
👉Lambs should be treated in late April/early May as losses are likely.
👉Treatment should be with a white or yellow drench as the more modern Ivermectins are not effective against this parasite.
👉Zerofen is recommended which is available from the shop
