BREED PROFILE: OLDE ENGLISH BULLDOGGE
Athletic. Loyal. Laid-back but alert.
The Olde English Bulldogge (spelled with the historical “e”) is a reimagined version of the original 18th-century Bulldog — combining the look of the classic bulldog with modern health, stability, and athleticism. This breed is strong, confident, and affectionate, making it ideal for active families who love bull breeds.
⸻
Breed Origin:
Developed in the 1970s in the USA by David Leavitt, the goal was to recreate the original working bulldog of the 1800s — a dog that was healthy, agile, and athletic, yet loyal and family-friendly.
The Olde English Bulldogge is a cross between:
• English Bulldog
• American Bulldog
• Bullmastiff
• American Pit Bull Terrier
This created a stronger, healthier bulldog with fewer breathing and joint issues.
⸻
Temperament:
• Confident and courageous — not fearful, but not overly aggressive
• Very loyal — bonds deeply with family
• Calm indoors, active outdoors
• Protective but not reactive — makes a great family guardian
• Good with kids and other pets if well-socialised
⸻
Appearance:
• Weight: 25–40 kg (55–90 lbs)
• Height: 16–20 inches
• Build: Strong, muscular, athletic
• Face: Broad head, shorter muzzle than APBT, but longer than modern Bulldogs
• Coat: Short and smooth, often in brindle, fawn, white, pied, and chocolate
⸻
Exercise Needs:
• Moderate to high — needs 45–60 minutes of exercise daily
• Loves walks, hikes, tug, and play sessions
• More athletic than the British Bulldog, but less intense than the APBT
⸻
Training & Socialisation:
• Intelligent but can be stubborn — needs consistent leadership
• Craves structure and engagement
• Start socialising young — they benefit from clear boundaries and exposure to people, pets, and places
• Respond well to positive reinforcement
⸻
Health Considerations:
Olde English Bulldogges were bred for improved health compared to the English Bulldog. Still, owners should watch for:
• Hip or elbow dysplasia
• Skin allergies
• Cherry eye or eyelid issues
• Bloat (avoid large meals after exercise)
⸻
Living Environment:
• Best in homes with space to stretch, but adaptable
• Thrive in active homes with a steady routine
• Not ideal for apartment living unless well-exercised
⸻
Fun Facts:
• The breed was only recently recognised by some kennel clubs and remains rare in many countries
• They LOVE their humans and are known for their goofy, expressive faces
• They often act like big babies — strong, but super snuggly
⸻
