🐟 White Spot Disease (Ich) in Fish

White dots on your fish?! It could be White Spot Disease, also known as Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)—one of the most common aquarium diseases.

🔍 What Is White Spot?

White Spot is a parasite that attaches itself to a fish's skin, fins, and gills. The white spots you see are actually the parasite burrowing into the fish's tissue.

Common Symptoms:

✅ Small white spots on the body and fins
✅ Flashing or rubbing against decorations
✅ Clamped fins
✅ Rapid breathing
✅ Loss of appetite
✅ Lethargy

❓ Why Does It Happen?

🔹 New fish that haven't been quarantined
🔹 Plants, decorations, or equipment from infected tanks
🔹 Poor water quality
🔹 Sudden temperature changes
🔹 Stress from overcrowding or aggressive tank mates

💊 How to Treat White Spot
Step 1: Raise Water Temperature (If Suitable)

Gradually increase the temperature to 28–30°C (82–86°F) if your fish species can tolerate it. This speeds up the parasite's life cycle, making treatment more effective.

Step 2: Use an Ich Treatment

Follow the instructions on a trusted White Spot medication. Always remove activated carbon from filters during treatment if the medication recommends it.

Step 3: Increase Aeration

Warmer water holds less oxygen, so add an air stone or increase surface movement.

Step 4: Continue Treatment

Keep treating for several days after the last visible white spot disappears to eliminate remaining parasites.

Step 5: Water Changes
