Have you met our mane man, Sandy? 🦁
This adorable crossbreed is the pride of all his carers here at the centre, and he’s our Underdog Dog of the Month for June.
Sandy is a friendly, active boy who loves play, cuddles and giving you his best smile at all times. We’d be lion if we said he was the calmest boy around – he can get excited about things! – but he loves to learn and just wants to be the very best dog he can be.
Maybe Sandy could be the king of your castle? Check out his profile and see if you’re a match!

❌ RAPESEED! ❌

It’s that time of year again where farmers fields have blossomed into pretty yellow flowers, these plants are called rapeseed. Although it may be tempting to place your dog in the mist to take a scenic photo, please avoid this at all costs!

Rapeseed is extremely poisonous for dogs, especially in highly sensitive canines.

Rapeseed is listed by Dogs Trust as toxic to our dogs if ingested and can cause symptoms such as:

❌Haemolytic Anaemia
❌ Blindness
❌ Damaged Nervous System
❌ Digestive Disorders
❌ Breathing Problems

Even walking through these fields should be avoided! In June 2019, a dog was been reported to suffer from severe open wounds after running through a crop of rapeseed.

Please seek immediate veterinary attention if your dog shows any signs of rapeseed poisoning.

“Being safe around dogs is no joke!”

Sadly, 320 people were hospitalised in 2020 due to dog bites. With the recent rise in dog ownership, we fear that this number could become even higher so, with the help of comedian, Des Bishop, we’ve launched ‘Be Dog Safe Week’ to help people learn how to be safe around dogs.

Just like humans, dogs can have stressful days so, we created an animation which explains ‘trigger stacking’ and ways to recognise when dogs are feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable.

For more information on ‘Be Dog Safe Week’ and to watch our animation or sign up for a workshop, visit DogsTrust.ie/BeDogSafe
