Dried up wild seaweed washed up on the beach can be fatal for dogs. When seaweed dehydrates from the sun it shrinks to a fraction of its size.

Seaweed absorbs water in the gut and block the intestine, causing a rupture which releases digestive acids in the body.

WHAT ANIMALS EAT SEAWEED?

Many invertebrates eat seaweed such as jellyfish, crabs, crustaceans, sea urchins, seals, sea turtles, lobster, crayfish, woodlice, to name a few.

Not many fish eat seaweed due to it being difficult to digest however, fish that have bacteria in their gut such as butter fish can eat it. The fish that don’t or can’t eat seaweed actually eat it indirectly, by eating the sea creatures that do eat it.

Land animals that eat seaweed are polar bears, Arctic foxes, seals and deer that live in coastal areas. Some coastal birds eat it too.
