The Difference Between Processed Pet Food and Raw Pet Food
When choosing what to feed our pets, it’s important to understand the difference between processed pet food (kibble) and raw pet food. While both are designed to feed dogs and cats, the way they are made and the ingredients they contain are very different.
Processed pet food, mainly kibble, is manufactured using high temperatures and heavy processing. The ingredients are mixed into a dough and cooked through a process called extrusion, where the food is heated multiple times before being shaped into pellets. Because this intense heat can destroy many natural nutrients, vitamins and minerals are often added back in afterwards in synthetic form. Processed foods can also contain fillers such as grains, wheat, corn, and other carbohydrates to help bind the product together and extend shelf life.
In contrast, raw pet food focuses on natural, minimally processed ingredients that closely resemble what dogs and cats would eat in the wild. A balanced raw diet typically includes muscle meat, bone, and organ meats, providing essential nutrients in their most natural and bioavailable form. Because the ingredients are not exposed to extreme heat during manufacturing, many of the natural enzymes, vitamins, and minerals remain intact.
Many pet owners who switch to raw feeding notice a number of benefits, including:

• Better digestion and smaller stools
• Improved dental health
• Increased energy levels
• Stronger immune systems
Another key difference is moisture content. Raw food naturally contains a high level of moisture, which helps support hydration and kidney health. Kibble, on the other hand, typically contains very little moisture, meaning pets must drink more water to compensate.
Ultimately, the goal of raw feeding is to provide pets with a diet that is closer to what nature intended — simple, natural ingredients that nourish the body without unnecessary processing.
