🐾MUZZLES🐾

No one - myself included - likes using a muzzle with their dog 😕 However, muzzles are a great tool that can help us manage certain situations in which our dogs, other dogs and people are at risk.

🤔 What type of muzzles are most convenient?

✅ Basket muzzles!
These type of muzzles allow our dogs to pant! This is crucial, as dogs do not sweat and therefore have a harder time controlling body temp if they can't pant 🥵
Basket muzzles generally also allow dogs to drink and eat, and are great for dogs that are in training.

❌ Soft/cloth muzzles.
Cloth muzzles usually work by holding a dog's mouth completly shut and do not allow dogs to pant or drink, therefore putting them at risk of overheating, apart from being unconfortable for the dog. ❗However cloth muzzles can be used in an emergency when risk of biting is not allowing a dog to receive urgent veterinary attention.

✅ When should my dog use a muzzle?
🐶 When working on behavioural issues related to biting or aggression.
🐶 When my dog is likely to eat anything off of the floor and may be in danger of ingesting something dangerous.
🐶 When required by law.

❌What should muzzles NEVER be used for?❌
🚫 To stop a dog from barking, whining or crying.
🚫 To stop a dog from breaking things or exhibiting other destructive behaviours.
❌ Muzzles should also never be left on a dog unsupervised.❌

❗A muzzle will not by itself solve any behavioural issues - behavioural issues require us to examine and understand their cause. It will however, allow to safely work with your dog to resolve them.

✅ In order for your dog to feel confortable in a muzzle, it is crucial for you to build a possitive association with it! The first time you *need* to use a muzzle should not be the first time your dog sees a muzzle.

🐾WHAT GETS REWARDED GETS REPEATED🐾

I always tell my students: think of your dogs rewards as dog money 🍗 = 💰

When you are training with your dog, your dog is working. Would you work for free? Your dog won't either! 🐶🍗

Your dog is more likely to repeat those behaviours that you reward!

This is true both for behaviours that we want our dog to repeat ✅ as well as those that we are unknowingly rewarding that we DON'T want our dog to repeat ❌

When rewarding we also have to pay attention to what things are rewarding to our dogs. Some dogs are motivated by toys ⚾ while other might be motivated by food 🍗.

Can you guess what Ofe's favorite reward is? Swipe to learn! 😂

🐾CAN MY DOG SLEEP ON THE BED?🐾

Actually, I should be asking Ofe if she'll let me fit on the bed 😂

Why do our dogs climb on our furniture? ❌Dominance has nothing to do with it ❌

Our pets most likely climb on the furniture for the same reason we have it: it's more confortable than sitting on the floor 🐶❤️🛋️

➡️ That said, if your dog is showing signs of aggression, resource guarding or other behavioural issues connected with sleeping on the bed or sharing the sofa, it might be time to consult with a trainer.

🐾WILL THEY GROW OUT OF IT?🐾

Raise your hand if you've walked into your home after a long day at work only to find what your dog's latest "art attack" has been! 🙋🏻‍♀️

They'll grow out of it, right? Not necessarily 🤦🏻‍♀️

✅ Some types of destructive behaviour can be associated to young age, exploration, or teething.

❌ However, at times destructive behaviour may be signaling an underlying behavioural issue, such as separation anxiety, stress, frustration or lack of sufficient stimulation.

❗Behavioural issues are usually not resolved by age. Your dog may not "grow out" of them, so it's best to address them with a professional sooner rather than later.

🤔 What are some things we can do meanwhile?

- When left unnatended, make sure your dog is in a safe environment.

- Provide your dog with sufficient exercise.

- Give your dog appropriate toys: interactive feeding toys are great! Make sure they are sturdy and safe to leave your dog alone with!

🐾ONLINE CLASSES FOR DOGS?🐾

Who would have thought, right? 😂

At the begining of 2020 many dog owners where skeptical that their dogs could be taught online 🐶💻

The secret to success is that you will be teaching your dog, as I guide you through the exercises! 👩🏻‍🏫 I apply this method to both in-person and online classes.

Why? Because I don't need for your dog to listen to me, I need it to work as a team with you 🙋🏻‍♀️🐕

🐾MEET US🐾

My name is Tatiana 🙋🏻‍♀️ and I have been in love with dogs my entire life.

On my shoulder is my best friend Ofelia 🐕 a bearded collie girl who came into my life and turned it upside down 🙃

Thanks to Ofe, I learned about the world of dog training! Experiencing first hand how training improved her quality of life inspired me to learn and become a trainer myself ❤️

Training is not just about teaching a dog how to sit and stay. It means finding a balance in the dog-human relationship in which we can both enjoy our life as a family and a team! 👱‍♀️❤️🐶

My goal at Train with Ofe is helping every dog and it's family achieve that!
