🤔 Please stop trying to find a magic cure days before an event your dog is afraid of. You can’t physically loose a stone to fit into your Halloween costume so don’t expect your dog to suddenly learn to be ok with a sound they fear. There is not quick fix, training doesn’t take long and will likely help your dogs confidence in so many other areas.
📚 If you start using our members area videos today you can pack a lot in to make their experience more pleasant and prepare more for next year.
A reminder to all. There’s no drug, cream or food to replace training. Lots of prescribed medications actually make the situation worse each year as the dog is mentally aware but physically incapable of running from their fear, just image that for a moment 😭.
If you have a new rescue dog, puppy or you’ve simply hold your hands up and say I could have done more this year I’ll do better next year. Here are my top tips.
Top tips:
⭐️ Do tag your dogs and have a registered microchip
⭐️ Do earlier walks in quieter areas
⭐️ Do start desensitisation using our Members area - you won’t get completely neutral in 4 days but it will help
⭐️ Do increase your enrichment that day particularly in the evening (snuffles, lick mats, kongs and chews as many items and as long lasting as possible to keep them going)
⭐️ Do have radio or TV on - avoiding TV triggers
⭐️ Do add reinforcement to their safe areas in the house, adding some lavender may help
⭐️ Do close windows and curtains to reduce sound
⭐️ Do keep fires and candles out of the way of any sudden dog reactions
⭐️ Do choose a restaurant for dinner - this avoids costumed children at the door and constant doorbell aggravations. Great for rescues or those with kid and doorbell
aggression.
⭐️ Keep all treats out of reach (then add about 4 feet to what you think is out of reach)
⭐️ Avoid trick or treating time for walks (costumes and dropped treats)
⭐️ Avoid costumes on kids around dogs who dislike costumes or kids
⭐️ Avoid bags of treats poured onto the floor - accidents will happen
⭐️ Do not leave a anxious dog alone during fireworks or trick or treat time. If you are a single parent ask for help.
