Just a bit of Saturday!

26/11/2024

We know it's important for sport dogs to retrieve but we must also check that the dog understands the exercise. The toys on the floor are way more interesting for Nova than the dumbbell but by planning, growling slowly and introducing distractions gradually we can get to this level without issues. Still a work in progress as sometimes her body takes over her mind but it's all about having fun with our dogs!

🐾 Training Tip: Distractions Done Right 🐾

One of the most common challenges in dog training? Getting your dog to listen when the world around them is full of distractions. Here’s my take on how to make distractions work for you, not against you:

1️⃣ Master the Basics First: Your dog needs a strong foundation in a quiet space. Don’t rush this. Make sure they really understand the command without any distractions.

2️⃣ Ease Into It: Once they’re consistent, introduce small distractions, like a ball rolling by or someone walking at a distance. Keep it simple at first—don’t throw them into the deep end.

3️⃣ Reward Focus, Ignore the Rest: When they ignore the distraction and focus on you, reward them right away. This is crucial. Dogs learn that paying attention to you, not everything else, is what matters.

4️⃣ Take It Step by Step: Training isn’t about quick fixes. Increase distractions gradually, but if they’re struggling, take a step back. It’s a process, and rushing only leads to frustration for both of you.

The end goal is a dog that stays cool and focused, no matter what’s going on. It’s a great feeling when your dog listens to you despite the chaos around them. Remember, a solid foundation and gradual exposure make all the difference.

🐾 It’s Mondioring Wednesday! 🐾

Let’s break down what this incredible sport entails, exercise by exercise. In Mondioring, teams are tested across three key phases—Obedience, Jumps, and Protection—each filled with unique challenges that build progressively with each level. Here’s what’s in store:

🟡 Obedience
Heeling: Precise movement alongside the handler.
Retrieve: Fetching specific items with focus.
Positions: Transitioning smoothly between sit, down, and stand.
Send Away: Responding to commands to move to a distant point.
Long Down: Holding a position, even with distractions.
Food Refusal: Resisting temptation from strangers.
Search for an Object: Locating a hidden object by scent.

🔵 Jumps
Hurdle: Clearing a set jump.
Long Jump: Covering maximum distance.
Palisade: Scaling a climbing wall for strength and agility.

🔴 Protection
Stick Attack: Facing a decoy with a stick confidently.
Back Attack: Protecting the handler by intercepting from behind.
Stopped Back Attack: Recalling from a chase on command.
Accessories Attack: Reacting to a decoy with objects or “accessories.”
Defense of Handler: Protecting the handler from a simulated threat.
Search and Es**rt: Finding and escorting a decoy safely.
Object Guard: Guarding a designated item without excessive aggression.

Mondioring challenges teams to build these skills progressively, starting in MR1 with core exercises, and increasing in difficulty as you advance to MR2 and MR3. Each level sharpens the dog’s agility, control, and protection instincts.

Got questions or thinking about trying Mondioring? Send us a DM—we’d love to chat!

Mondioring is demanding, but the bond and precision it builds? Unmatched! 🐕💪

Why Engagement is the Secret Ingredient in Dog Training Success 🐾✨

We know you’ve heard this a million times, but we feel it's important to remind everyone what engagement really means—and why it’s so critical in dog training.

We often meet clients who come with the right mindset, the right tools, and all the energy in the world for training. They give it everything they have, yet the results don’t seem to match their efforts. This can be frustrating and disheartening. Many clients, especially those who feel they’ve made progress, are surprised when we talk about focusing on engagement skills in the first session. They may wonder why we’re starting with the basics when they feel they've already moved beyond them. The truth is, fixing engagement often resolves many issues that owners believe are more complex than they actually are.

Here’s the thing: if you’re trying to teach your dog something, but they’re not focused on you—no matter how perfect your treats, timing, and body language may be—the message simply won’t come across as intended. Dog training isn’t about the sheer amount of effort you put in; it’s about the quality of short, focused sessions that build upon each other. Keep this in mind when beginning your training journey or if you find yourself needing to revisit the basics. It’s something that benefits everyone to return to from time to time.

Remember, while we can’t entirely compete with the environment, it’s far easier to keep your dog’s attention when they choose to stay with you. This is one of the most challenging parts of dog training—teaching an owner how to become interesting to their dog. But once engagement is there, everything else tends to flow more smoothly.

Ultimately, five minutes of quality work will always beat an hour of hard training! 🐕❤️

What is Mondioring?

We’re excited to share our passion—Mondioring! 🐕‍🦺 For those unfamiliar, Mondioring is a thrilling dog sport that tests both the bond between dog and handler, as well as the dog’s character and handler’s skills through exercises like heeling, food refusal, jumps, and protection work.

What is Mondioring? 🌟

This sport is divided into 3 levels, increasing in difficulty and duration:
1️⃣ Mondioring 1
2️⃣ Mondioring 2
3️⃣ Mondioring 3

To progress, teams must pass the Mondioring exam twice, with each successful attempt called a leg. The exam itself is divided into three key categories:

🐾 Obedience – Tasks like heeling, retrieving, and food refusal test focus and control.

🚀 Jumps – High and long jumps evaluate the dog’s agility, strength, and confidence.

🛡️ Protection Work – Dogs must protect the handler against an attacker, showcasing bravery and discipline while maintaining control.

✨ We’re incredibly proud that our dog, Nova, is the first dog in Ireland to achieve the Mondioring 1 exam this year! 🏆 We traveled to the UK to compete, and Nova’s performance was outstanding, marking a significant milestone for us.

Mondioring is not just about the physical capabilities of the dog but also the deep connection between dog and handler. Each trial is unique, adding excitement and unpredictability, which is why we love this sport so much.

We’ll be sharing more about Mondioring every Wednesday! 🗓️ From tips and insights to our personal experiences, we can’t wait to bring you along on this journey.

Let’s explore Mondioring together! 🐕✨
