🌞 Hot Weather Horse Care – Thermoregulation Tips
With high temperatures across Ireland this weekend, it’s important to support your horse’s natural thermoregulation systems to help them stay cool, comfortable, and safe.

Here’s how you can help:

💧 Hydration – Make sure fresh, clean water is always available. Horses can drink up to 50 litres a day in hot weather. Adding electrolytes to their feed or water can help replace what’s lost through sweat.

✅Shade & Shelter – If your horse is turned out, ensure they have access to shade—trees, field shelters, or bringing them in during the hottest part of the day.

✅Cool Down – After exercise or turnout, use cool (not ice-cold) water to hose your horse off. Scrape excess water off quickly to avoid trapping heat.

✅Air Flow – Good ventilation in stables. Use fans if needed, and keep stable doors open when safe to do so.

✅Adjust Work – Ride early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler. Keep sessions light, and always cool your horse down properly.

👀 Watch for Heat Stress Signs:
Sweating heavily, rapid breathing, high re**al temperature, lethargy, or refusal to eat are all red flags. If you’re concerned, contact your vet immediately.

👉If you want to know how horses regulate body temperature—and how you can manage it effectively year-round, Our brand-new Equine Thermoregulation online course is launching soon at Equi Ed!
