🚗☀️ With the warm weather due to continue, the ISPCA is reminding pet owners that dogs can die if left in hot cars. Pet owners often think leaving a window open is sufficient for their pet but this is not enough to prevent heatstroke under intense sunshine which can have fatal consequences.

Cat bites.
We all love our feline friends, but sometimes in play or in defence, bites happen. Cat's mouths are full of bacteria that mean cat bite wounds become rapidly infected. This can cause redness, swelling, and pain or progress into cellulitis or septicaemia.
Recently, one of our clients suffered a cat bite. On the day she was bitten, she sensibly visited the doctor and received a tetanus vaccine and antibiotics. However, within 24 hours, she knew things were not right. The wound was red, hot, and swollen. So began a chain of doctors; Mydoc, to Mullingar Hospital, straight up to the Mater.
She received IV antibiotics and pain relief. She underwent surgery on her hand to resolve the infection. Only after 4 days in treatment she allowed home with a course of physiotherapy to follow due to damage to her knuckle joint.
We are grateful she has let us share her story; as it shows how a "small bite" can become a big problem.
We wish her a speedy recovery. We hope this story can spread awareness of the danger of cat bites.
Always act quickly to clean and disinfect a bite wound. But if the swelling, redness, or pain are not resolving, always seek medical advice.

With May being Melanoma Awareness Month, use this as a reminder that even when you don’t drink, don’t smoke and don’t use sunbeds you are still at risk of developing a tumour.
I’ve been quite outspoken about what I have been going through these past 12 months to raise awareness but never actually posted here.
Being told at 24 years of age by two specialists you have malignant melanoma is not anything I would ever wish on anyone. I was lucky a third specialist took a look at my results and told us it was a benign tumour that mimics all the characteristics of the most aggressive skin cancer without the spreading to other organs, 3 surgeries, a lot of hospital visits and a whole lot of support from everyone I am getting back to my old self.
Please remember to be responsible, I was lucky enough to have a little voice following me around telling me to go to a doctor.
Your skin is your largest organ, look after it ❤️
