Christopher Columbus reportedly used dolphins as a navigation aid on his famous voyage of discovery.

His autobiography, "Mira allí está, América!" famously describes how, when he and his crew had given up hope of finding land, pods of dolphins appeared guiding the way.

The Spanish volume quotes Columbus:
"Odio a los delfines. Quiero matarlos. Puse mi dedo en el agujero. Entonces no pueden respirar," which translates, "The dolphins did not fall off the edge of the earth. That gave us courage."
