A North Clare animal welfare charity says it will likely be reduced to covering emergency cases only following a funding cut.

Four organisations in this county received funding as part of a €6.4m government grant scheme, with €31,475 going to Second Chance Animal Rescue, €20,000 to Clare Animal Welfare and €10,000 to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group.

While the Burren Animal Rescue in Tubber was allocated €20,475, it marks a 50% reduction on the grant the voluntary group received last year.

Chairperson Sheena Twist says they’re baffled by the decision.

Please Share: You may have seen the Department of Agriculture's press release on Friday about the annual animal welfare grants being issued, what you may not realise is that for some unexplained reason they have cut our funding by €20,000 from the amount we received in the past two years. We have written to them and Clare's 4 TDs to seek an explanation for this drastic cut.

Fundraising is hard work and knowing what we have achieved from various campaigns over the years there is absolutely no way we can fundraise enough money to make up for the shortfall in our grant allocation. Our veterinary and feed bills alone in 2024 totalled €31,186 so as you can imagine we are going to have to completely scale back the number of animals and services we provide in 2026, https://www.burrenrescue.com/about_us/

At present we are caring for 10 dogs, 32 cats, 9 hamsters, 3 pigs, 3 sheep, 7 donkeys and 22 horses/ponies. Each year we assist members of the public with the costs of getting cats (and dogs in certain circumstances) spayed/neutered. Obviously, all the animals that come into our care are spayed/neutered (in the case of equines all colts/stallions are castrated) prior to rehoming. We also have the ancillary costs of worming, vaccinations, microchipping and, in the case of equines, farriers & passporting.

In October 2024 we lost our haybarn to the first winter storm and work is ongoing to raise funds to cover the costs involved in rebuilding, the ground is repaired and framework purchased so we are hoping to have that much erected in the coming weeks. We have sufficient funds raised to cover the cost of roofing it but will need to raise more to sheet the walls. Prior to the barn damage we had been raising funds for a new training/handling area for the dogs and equines but the project was put on hold until the barn was dealt with, sadly it looks like this project will have to be put on hold for the foreseeable future.

Now more than ever we need your support - tickets are currently available for our Winter Prize Draw https://www.burrenrescue.com/shop/winter-draw-2025-ticket/, closing date is the 18th of December.

We can't do what we do without you 🫢

Just one of the animals we have helped this year thanks to your support (https://www.burrenrescue.com/shop/winter-draw-2025-ticket/ ) ....

Meet Archie, a sweet friendly young boy, approx 9-10mths old, who arrived into our care in October after he wandered into a kind person's home following a night of bad weather.

At some point poor Archie suffered an injury to his right front leg and due to it not being treated the leg was now a hindrance so had to be amputated.

He has healed up well and has also been neutered so he is now ready for a loving place to call home.

If you would like more information or would like to offer Archie a home please contact us.

Can You Cheer Sheena Up?
... fundraising efforts this year have been hampered on numerous occasions this year due to 'human health' reasons and the year is going to end on the same note as Sheena has had to pull out of the Christmas Markets she was looking forward to attending on account of having had an operation yesterday.

The latest project she is working on is to improve the accommodation for the 28 adult cats (friendly, semi-feral & feral - all healthy spayed/neutered & ready for homes) living at the rescue. Their previous sleeping/eating area had been battered by escapee pigs one too many times so they are currently making do with a temporary feeding set up which is far from ideal as you can see from the photos. Their new area will have an 8'x7.5' shed with various height ledges for eating/sleeping and an outdoor fenced area with some loose housing/eating areas for the cats that don't like mixing with others or confined areas. Of course work on the project is now on a 2 week pause whilst she recovers but it also gives time for lots of scrolling on Pinterest for ideas for the inside of the shed.

So can you cheer Sheena up by buying some tickets and sharing the link with your friends & family 🫢

Remember everything we do is voluntary, none of us get paid and every cent that is given to the rescue is used to better the lives of animals in need. We may not have purpose built buildings with underfloor heating, glass walls, etc but we do have an abundance of love, care, respect, patience and a never ending desire to give them a better tomorrow.
